I live in Ohio. SW in Cincinnati. More well off than others here. The cost of living is low. If you have a good income stream you can live very well.

Did you shed a tear when you heard the news about the "Touchdown Jesus" statue in Monroe being destroyed by a lightening strike? Apparently even God didn't like that monstrosity.

I'm not sure I'd say the CoL is all *that* low. Now is it low compared to extremely expensive regions? Yup. But it can get lower elsewhere in Ohio.

And it might be sort of regional within the greater Cinci region. I can imagine there are areas where property values are lower which is where locality plays a major role in property taxes. Some school districts are based on income tax but most are levied on property tax.

I drove by that a couple times when I was younger and always got a kick out of it, but now there's a less interesting monstrosity in its place.

as an aside, it is currently snowing here.

We're in our rainy season here, but no snow.

Exactly why I moved down south (even though southern Ohio looks to be heading firmly into springtime soon). I do miss going to Reds' games, but they've sucked for so long now, I don't think I've missed much since I left.

spring is here, too. It just takes a little longer to get going. We already have various flowers sprouting up in gardens. The robins are back looking for food. And yesterday I saw 4 hawks circling about overhead. I wish a had a picture of that. It was pretty cool.

No one lives in Ohio...Ohio doesn't really exist. It's just something parents use to scare misbehaving children...
"Johnny, you'd better behave or you'll be sent to Ohio!"

You got that warning mixed up just a bit, but I'm here to help you out. The correct warning to scare children is "Johnny, you'd better behave or you'll be sent to Cleveland!".

No parent could ever be that cruel. The Cleveland threat is reserved for rapists, murderers, and reposters...folks who really deserve the worst.

I lived in Lake Tahoe and I plowed snow for a transpiration agency for 20 years. We have an AWD vehicle and will probably buy another before I retire.

Housing is way cheaper than California.

Waynesville $240k, decent area

Sacramento $240k, ghetto area

No state income tax?

We have state income tax.

Ohio weather is 100% worse than Cali. Dayton is kind a dead industrial town too. You'll feel more at home in Columbus or Cincinnati if you're from a big city. Cinci has one of the coolest food cultures in the country BTW. Nice if you're a foodie

I'm originally from that area @olds. Now in Atlanta and would never go back to live but appreciate the experiences I had and what I learned. My brother also left the area for San Diego a few years ago and seems to be much happier with the Left Coast.

If I had to find a place to live it would be in Miamisburg, Springboro or Centerville or Beavercreek. Farther south I would look at Mason or the West Chester area. The bad extremes seemed to be Dayton proper and the west side of Cincinnati.

There's nothing wrong with living in the midwest as long as you live near a major city - Cincy, Cleveland, Columbus, Indy, Louisville, Milwaukee, etc. Michigan is a beautiful state as well, and southern Indiana and southern Ohio are nice too. Most think of Indiana as a flat land full of farms and you do see a lot of that north of Indianapolis towards Chicago, but the glaciers didn't cover the entire state and as a result, the south has rolling hills and interesting geography and fossil beds. Ohio is pretty similar in that regard.

You'll live like a king compared to the same salary on the coasts. I have to laugh at folks bashing the midwest and extolling the virtues of the coasts, when many of them live in places the size of my master bedroom or worse. Not that I don't like the coasts - in fact, I really enjoy the west coast, but I'd never live there. The negatives outweigh the positives for me.

The biggest downside of the midwest is the weather. Summers are hot and humid and winters/early spring are hugely unpredictable. We had a snowstorm go through Indy Saturday night - accumulation wasn't huge, but it was coming down hard and made visibility awful. We'll usually have a week in December or January where the sun comes out and we'll have 60-70 degree weather for a few days and then it will drop back into the 20s.

If it were me, I'd try to move closer to Cincy than Dayton if possible.

Cincinnati's pretty mild in summer. Might see days that top out at 88, otherwise low 90s. But you get real winter ... sometimes consecutive days where it stays below freezing.

In Cincinnati you're within 100 miles of a bunch of airports - Louisville, Columbus, Covington/Cinci, Dayton, Indianapolis - so you can pick your departure point. I once left Cincinnati, drove to Louisville, got on a plane, then flew back to Cincinnati, and after a layover of an hour or so, flew off to Texas. It was cheaper than flying out of Cincinnati airport which is a Delta hub and known for high prices.

If you do make the move, you'd be in a pretty decent spot for road trips/travel. Lots of fun places to take family/explore.

~3ish hours to Lake Erie,
~5-6 hours from Smokey Mountains, Asheville,
~5-6 hours from Lake Michigan coast of Michigan,
~4-5 hours from Chicago,
~2ish hours from Indy
~8-10ish hours to the east coast
~4ish hours to Canadian border via Detroit
~6-7 hours to Niagara Falls.

Also, here is a fun little temperature map showing max temp from 2017.

Looks like Dayton summer highs are pretty warm, but, also looks like it cools down in the evenings nicely.

(Edit: I'm not from Ohio, but, coming from IL, Have traveled through OH numerous times, and have stopped for a few meals and seen some of the sights in northern OH)

Not bad. Not a ton in southern Ohio, but as others have said, there's lots of places to go and things to see on all sides.
