This is my first brick home and I know virtually nothing about tuck pointing.

I've noticed that in some spots where repair work was done, the brick is lighter colored. Hopefully it weathers so that it matches the surrounding brick.

I'm hoping that the mason didn't do a poor job.

that brick is just a veneer.

that is a huge crack and means your house has moved a lot. i would be thinking foundation issues?
tuck pointing is replacing mortar, not filling a crack with caulk. the white could be from some repair work that was done in the cold months, they put anti-freeze in the mortar so it has time to dry properly. it seeps out after a while if the brick is not acid washed.

that looks pretty bad. i hope you got a home inspection.

They just did it today. I'm hoping it's just dust.

The house was built in 1922. The foundation is solid.

Any masons here?

Then it's probably dust from when they cut out some bricks, but that still looks like ass. There are still some support issues there

What are you asking? Looks like they dug out the old mortar and need to replace it.

Does the second pic show the final repair, I cant see it. The wall looks to have a buckle which is nearly impossible to repair. Honesty if you want it to look good they should have ripped out a large section and replaced it cheating the joints to make them all a bit larger without having that hideous gap.

you came to atot to ask us what we think of the repair, then assume because we are not all trained masons that we don't know enough to answer your questions because you don't like our answers?

Are you a mason by training?

I'm a long time DIY craftsman. I pay attention when professionals do work I am untrained in. The water damage, settling and, poor pointing is obvious in your pics. I spent a summer removing the brick facade from a very expensive home that an unlicensed brick layer had done a year earlier so that a master mason could redo the work. The brickwork I removed looked better than what you've got.

Why is it unreasonable to ask what one's qualifications are when they state their opinion?

Because this is anandtech, not bricktrovel. Its a tech geared forum, theres a high chance people on here are good DIYers but I doubt anyone here is a master mason.

Besides I know nothing about bricklaying and even I can tell that looks like shit, hell I probably could have done a better job.
