Who made a mistake?

Hello, folks.

A few days ago, I purchased 1GB USB Flash Drive/MP3 player off eebay. He shipped it right off the bat, and I got it in two business days. It was awesome!
While I was playing around, however, I realized it is USB 1.1 instead of USB 2.0.
Here is the title of the product:

"New 1GB MP3 Player WMA Flash Voice Rec USB2.0"

And a phrase that he mentioned about USB:

"High quality USB data storage, supporting USB 1.1 and 2.0 full speed"

Only those two lines mentioned "USB."
When I read his ad, I thought it is USB 2.0 because of those. But it was USB 1.1 (25 seconds for 22MB file transfer), and the manual that came with the player confirmed it saying: High-speed USB1.1 (Read: 1000K Byte, Write: 800K Byte)

What do you guys think? Did he make a false advertisement? Or did I get it wrong?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

False advertisement, of course. He says it supports 2.0. It does not in fact support 2.0.

if something is advertised at 2.0 full speed, I'd damn well expect it to support 480mb/s , of course, now that I look at it, full and hi are different... and I dont like that.

The term "Full Speed" is really deceptive.

But how abut his title "USB2.0"? Is it alright?
I think he should've said "USB2.0 compatible".

Yeah the USB 2.0 Full speed and high speed is a JOKE.

Full speed usually means 'maximum' in all cases but this. How can Hi-speed be faster then 'full speed'?! Crazy.

I think they changed it so that people wouldn't only look for 2.0 products when the market was full of 1.1, even if it didn't need it.

"OMG, I must get that new mouse, It's USB 2. I'll just toss out the old USB 1 mouse"

But I agree it smells the way they changed definitions.

You should have checked out the S&H or the P&P stuff and be 'happy' with it. I always factor that in to the 'total' price when I buy stuff. It is 'fair' for a person to add as much or as little they want as they do need to spend time to print labels, drive to the post office and send it off.

Try to challenge him and see what you can out of him.

I still think the USB 2.0 naming thing sucks BADLY. Only stuff that uses the full 480mbps speed should be USB 2.0. Others should be labled as 1.1. Or if it is USB 1.1 and works with USB 2.0 it should be labled as 'Compatible' not 'full speed'.

Sellers always charge outrageous fees on ebay. They do it to make their item look cheaper and/or to scam their way out of paying higher ebay fees. Just check before you bid on an item.

And I still don't think it's even USB2.0 Full Speed.
The manual clearly said it's "USB1.1 (Read 1000KB, Write: 800KB)", nothing about USB2.0 or Full Speed whatever...
When I tried to transfer 22MB, it took 25 seconds. My USB2.0 HIGH Speed Flash drive finishes it in 4 seconds even though my desktop doesn't have USB2.0.

I just retested transferring 25MB file to both devices through my desktop's USB1.1 port.

Cruzer 256MB USB2.0 flash drive = 4 secs
Nomaned 1GB USB2.0 Full Speed claimed USB MP3 Player = 23 secs

I have to find my old 64MB USB1.1 flash drive to test its speed.

Let me clear about this confusion.

USB1.1 low speed = 1.5Mbps
USB1.1 full speed = 12Mbps
USB2.0 high speed = 480Mbps

This is the fact. Right?

According to my test results,
USB2.0 high speed flash drive through USB1.1 port = about 5.5Mbps
USB2.0 full speed declared mp3 player = about 0.88Mbps

If my "true" USB1.1 flash drive transfers alsmot the same speed or faster than 1GB mp3 player, the seller advertisement is false.

If USB1.1 flash drive transfers much slower that 1GB mp3 player, his ad is not false.

I will let you know when I finish the test.

There's far more to it than that, the speed of the flash media is the ultimate limitation.

USB1.1/2/whatever has no impact on actual write speed, merely the maximum throughput of the interface.

I agree completely that the current USB 2.0 naming conventions are fvcked up, I go check to refresh my memory every time I buy a USB device. Absolutely asinine naming IMO.

However...

You got exactly what you paid for, flash media compatible with USB1.1 and USB 2.0 full speed.
