I need a good set of tools, like screwdrivers (from jewel to computer-sized) and pliers. What's a good brand?

Craftsman is great for the screwdrivers; if they break you can just get them replaced.

Or Snapon, if you got time to wait for the truck to show up and are willing to pay for the brandname....

That said, Craftsman "you break it you get a new one" policy seems to overshadow Snap-ons reputation for excellence

Craftsman makes mediocre tools for weekend mechanics. No self respecting professional mechanic would be caught dead with a Craftsman in his tool chest.

Does this guy sound like a professional mechanic to you?

If he was a professional mechanic, he wouldn't be asking here. Craftsman is fine for solid tools (though I wouldn't touch their power tools), and if he does manage to break one, he can get it replaced.

Snapon is not all it is cracked up to be. Why the hell do I want a polished ratchet? Do you know how much it annoyed me when I was using a Snap On ratchet with greasy hands only to have it slip and bash my knuckles? I like my knuckles.

Snap on quality is definately better. no question there. I happen to have a 70th anaversary Snap On ratchet set, gold plated and everything, so I know my sh!t about tools. (like having a tool set you will never use means anything, hah!) for 99.999% of the people on the planet, Craftsman is more then they will ever need. the other 0.001% of the people work in spaceflight. They can have a snap on set.

BS I have ~$5K+ worth of SnapOn and Mac tools. They are great tools but I also love Craftsman. I've broken all brands of tools and given the choice I would rather walk into Sears and replace it rather than find the SO or Mac man.

They do have tools I can't get from Sears however.
