Who makes the best backpacks?

There's a Sports Authority near here, that's the biggest one I can think of. There's a Canfields...my friend said Arizona packs were sold at JC Penney so I might look there too.

Yes.

No, seriously, hiking backpacks are a lot more durable than regular cheap ass $20 ones you can get at Wal-Mart. Besides, there are those smaller day-packs or over-night ones that holds less than 35L, which would be just perfect for school use.

Well the Yavapai is $69 at ebags and less with a coupon. Pretty darn close to $50. Whoever said that TNF's packs are made by Jansport, I don't think you're wholly correct. The Yavapai is made by TNF--I am almost positive.

Thought I'd just jump in here and ask a question. I've seen people in the city wear backpacks that have this hard plastic shell in the back.

Looks sort of like a sled or something, regular sized backpack, but the back part is some cuvy shell. Looks cool as hell, anyone know the name of the company that produces it?

edit: uhm ok, the shell isn't the part that makes contact with your back... aside from that, I have a mental image, but hard to describe...

er.. dude you've got to be more specific.. plastic shell on the back, you mean the side against your back? It could be an external frame, which allows more ventilation.

I bought my backpack there 10 years ago and except for a plastic snap cracking and the water proofing getting worn, it's still perfect.

If it ever does wear out, LLBean will replace it for free

Spalding. I bought one last year, comes with a ver ywell made front side pocket made of mesh (big enough for most speakers). And the main pocket is definetly big enough for any laptop.

Very sturdy as well, nice big soft shoudler straps, and a cell phone pocket to boot.

I bought a new pack today. I was looking at them in the range of $40. This cost $41. Its a timberland and after comparing it to jansports in the store this one seemed a lot better. The jansports were a few bucks cheaper though...my timberland's shoulder straps kick ass. I carted back about 20 lbs in it for 20 minutes and my shoulders were fine.

I'm going to go with this one. One of the testimonials says the guy keeps his Dell Inspiron in the bag, and another says he had an Eastpak for 10 years. I think I can safely buy this one without seeing it first.

Kadesh is on the right track. LL Bean backpacks are really nice and durable too. The one I have from last year is still in great shape even after the beating it took. I am getting a new one with a sigle shoulder strap to carry my new Inspiron 8000 and books. Both were around $50 each.
