i'd make it a poll but I don't know very many Laptop manufacturers. What do you guys think is a good laptop.

(not any particular model, I'll browse around and find one I like later, just what MFR do you like?)

Well, I personally have not looked into laptops much, but my good friend has just recently bought one.

He, of course, did a lot of research before buying, and finally decided to go with Dell.

Although Sony makes excellent laptops, there were a few reason why he finally decided to go with a dell system:

-first of all, they have an awesome custom build system thing on there site, so you can choose exactly what you want
- a great 3 year warranty with some nice features
-they make beautiful screens and a nice price
-they are one of the few who have a 3D accelerator in their systems. Although an ATI Rage 128 8mb is nothing to boast about, its better than nothing

A recommendation to make also. If you buy a system from them, make sure you dont choose extra ram from them. They charge an arm in the leg for it, and you can get the exact same stuff from cruical for much less.

Do they just use regular SO-DIMMs? Or does crucial have specialty dell-compatible RAM?

Yeah, they are standard SO-DIMMs. I belive they come with 2 slots, and will support up to 256 each.

go with Dell - you won't be disappointed - although it probably won't be the cheapest option.

Fook dell, if your going to get a laptop do it right the first time, either build it yourself with oem brand parts or goto, Gamepc and build a gamebook at there site. At least you know what your paying for part for part.

In case you don't know many companies don't make the laptops they sell (including Dell). You should really check this out.

BIG BLUE BABY...IBM all the way...if you can spend a little bit more..Thinkpad's are the way to go...I've used Compaq' Dell and Gateway and none of them compare with build quality and support. IBM's support on their laptops is unbeatable with Easyserv. I dont care for the Dell Inspiron touchpad/trackpoint pointing device..plus they just dont seem to be real solid build wise..Stick with the IBM 600/A20/T20 series..you cant go wrong..

Some may call me biased since I used to work for Dell, but I own a Latitude CPx that is loaded to the max.. The build quality is superb, and the LCD is crystal clear. I was able to cram 512MB memory (2 256MB Samsung modules) into it, and Win2K loves it.

The only reason I have it for sale is because $$ talks !!

www.winbook.com. Just don't get a POS ESS build in modem. Some pretty decent prices on their newer ones with DVD. You can ask about specific models on their forum under tech support.

Depends on what you want if for. Dell is probably the best laptop functionality/power wise. I have a sony vaio because I got sony digital camcorder I want to hook it up to plus it has bunch of video editing and multimedia function. For price/performance stand point, Toshiba is pretty good. So basically, it all comes down to what you value most, overall power/function, specific function, or price/performance.

I've worked with tosh's dell's compaq's and sony's , and i still say i wish i could build my own like a desktop,
but stay away from compaq's,

and if i hafta shell out 3g's for it any ways, i'd go with someone who could squeeze in a burner.

Most of the laptops from the big 5 are made in the same fab's. For examble, for two weeks they only make Dell's then change the product line and for the next two weeks make Gateways and so on. and even the supply parts mostly come from the same sources but are just named different. You just need to choose the Price/Config/Features you want.

Ok well here's what I'm looking at right now
Toshiba Satellite 2805-S301

It has a 650, 128MB RAM, 14.1" Active Matrix, 10Gig hard drive, 8X DVD Rom with 56k Modem and 10BaseT LAN.

It's $2200

I want 128MB RAM because I intend to put Win2k on it, 14.1" screen at least, 15" would be nice, but not needed, I definately need LAN and Modem would be nice to, a DVD would be cool but not 100% needed, and minimum 10Gig hard drive. The CPU could probably be about 300Mhz and I woudln't notice a difference heheh seriously though a 500 would be plenty of juice.

Do you guys think I could do better than $2200 for a 500Mhz+, 128MB RAM, 14", 10Gig+, DVD, Modem, LAN?

Also what kind of mouse replacment does Toshiba have..I can't tell.

The laptop looks ok, but a bit expensive. I got my Sony Vaio PIII 500, 64MB RAM 14" Screen, 6.4GB for like $1700. Added 128MB for $100 from Buy.com few weeks ago, so whole thing cost me like $1800, and that was 3 month ago, so prices should go down a bit. My HDD is a bit small, but it's not that bad since it is not going to be my main PC.

My suggestion is look at sites like hot deal forums at this site, or other hot deal forums for special deals. I got my laptop with $200 rebate from buying at a specific site, and $100 rebate from Sony. Just don't pay retail!!

You are right that you don't need a high power CPU, but memory is definately a factor. But just one thing, if you want to upgrade your laptop to Win2k by yourself, make sure you got all the drivers. I have been wanting to do the same thing with my sony, but I am not sure if I can get all the drivers for it. Hopefully Toshiba release all the drivers to everyone.

Heard Toshiba made the best.

IBM's are best-looking (sexy).

I have Micron (2 yrs old, P150).

Dell? Gateway? Prolly good bang for buck.
