Dell makes toys. Lenovo makes serious machines. H-P has eaton Dell's lunch in market share, because in recent months, Dell quality has dropped.

for actual gaming, you will NEED one with a discrete video card. For CSS on full detail, probably the 7900GS GO. The 8700GT GO may work, but wont be worth it unless you want HD playback.

7300GO or any other integrated graphics won't even cut it. The shared system/video memory kills games.

I am going back to school I got a Compaq AMD dual core 1.7 80 g HD 15.4 wide screen for $509 ou the door at Staples.

get the new macbook pro, guarantee you wont regret it, beautiful 1 inch design super drive direct x 10 core 2 duo 2 gb ram one of the nicest screens in the industry with a backlit keyboard and so so much more. Beautiful things that can run WINDOWS and mac and yes without any hacks apple has released a program called parallells as well as bootcamp. Iv gone mac and dont want to go back. Make the switch, this is coming from an avid pc lover and builder

btw apple has a discount right now if your going to school and you can fake the number if you buy online which you have to do because apple stores are out of stock, the deal is 200 dollors off and a free ipod or 239 dollor voucher. aka around 440 bucks in savings for a laptop that is a king

Apple did not release Parallels, it is made by another company altogether and costs $80 to purchase, whereas Boot Camp, released by Apple is free as of right now, however they may charge for it in the future after Leopard releases. I know that Leopard will ship with Boot Camp already installed, and the drivers will apparently be on the install discs.

Price starts at $1,036 and up - depends on how you configure it.
Probably plan on spending aroung $1500 for a decently configured laptop, with 2 gig memory, fast hard drive, etc.

MacBook Pros have great style, performance, and build quality but you definitely pay for it. Thinkpads are great but have generally low-end graphics solutions. They are awesome for business but aren't for gaming at all. HP and Apple probably make the nicest consumer laptops.

Right now I have a Dell Latitude and it's A.OK. for me. I travel a lot and am pretty hard on laptops.

Before this one I've had 2 different NEC's and a Toshiba.

Great Dell prices are available occasionally.

Once I had a cap fall off this Dell Latitude keyboard key & get lost.
Dell had a complete new keyboard on my doorstep in 2 days, under warranty. I was impressed.

I'd really like to try assembling a laptop from bare bones, but for a brand box, the Dell Latitude has been a good value for the $.

Mine's getting old. Maybe that Dell Latitude D830 next!

the lenovo thinkpads are great, he will be able to run source fine with an ati dedicated. Lenovo has been making the IBM thinkpads for years, they just recently bought the rights to put their name on it now. Go thinkpad if you want reliability and cs source.
