Trend Micro or Command Antivirus are also a good lot. I really like the Trend - scans mail as it comes in and no system stability issues and other unnecessary add-ons.

Trend, Mcafee, Innoculate, Norton - Tried all but don't really see much difference. Running Innoculate but agree that Trend was very good too.

Innoculate, although free, scores at the bottom of any comparison of virus proyection. I think in this case one gets what they pay for..

Mcafee new version is pretty good plus you get free updates on DAT files even after a year unlike some other anti-virus programs.Btw I`ve never had problems with Mcafee anti-virus programs in the last 4 years I have been using them.

I've used McAfee since 1992 when I wanted to update the virus definitions in DOS 6 and Microsoft suggested them.

Norton has the biggest virus database, as of December 12 there are 48,412.
Every other program I've seen, usually ranges in 20,000 - 30,000 range.

I use Norton AntiVirus 2000 (v5.0) and I'm pretty happy with it. Although it's a real RAM sucker. I have 128MB PC133 RAM, and I get "Out of memory" messages when playing CounterStrike.
So I have to turn it off, to continue playing.
Except for that, it's a nice program. Especially with the ease of updating and all.

We used to have problems with McAfee, but the program has been pretty reliable the past year or so. In a corporate environment (or anywhere else for that matter), I wouldn't run the "home" version 5.x; I'd run VirusScan v4.5 + SP1 + newest SDAT. Also, I'd definitely upgrade v4.0x or older if you're still running them. I just read on McAfee's site that they rolled their DATs back to 4109 because of some issues with v4.02 with NTFS. 4.02 is ancient. People still using that version (and probably don't update their DAT files weekly, either) deserve to have problems IMHO.

BTW, VirusScan scans for ~60,000 virii, worms, trojans currently.

I know I shouldnt do this and I will learn when I get hit by a big one but I dont use any constant virus checker. I only download AVP to scan my comp once every few months and then uninstall it!

Ouch. That will be a painful lesson to learn. From your sig, your PC should have just enough power to run AV software...

The university I work at swears by Command anti-viris.

It provides up to the minute updates that rival norton, costs less, and doesn't try and take over your system.

It's caught everything we've encountered, and this is a public lab setting.

I use it on my home machines as well.

I like McAfee Clinic. The updates are small and quick to download. It checks automatically for updates daily. Email me if you want a free trial...
