Thanks for the info. Is it considered a quality burner?
Well, I've done a bunch of looking on the various hardware and CD/DVD sites since yesterday and that appears to be a question not unlike asking "which is the best religion?", if you know what I mean. The people who ran out and bought the Sony 500's and 510's always chime in that nothing beats the Sony. The folks who bought the Pioneer drives will tell you something similar about their drives. And then there are a load of people who have one of these NEC drives (either the 1300, or one of it's predecessors -- the 1000 or the 1100). The general conversation around the NEC seems to be about it's relative pickiness when it comes to media. You'll find entire lists people have posted where they've tested various media to see if the disks burn in the NEC and at what speed.
As for me, I'm keeping it. I'm fine now that I've found out it was this drive. I don't mind spending a buck or two more to get media that I don't have to worry about and I'm not one of those who intends to use this drive to set up my own little commercial DVD pirating operation. I just bought it to burn home movies of my first kid (who is due soon) from my digital camcorder. I figure my family will dig having DVD's sent to them documenting her growing up.
Sorry to be vague. I'm sure there are some of the DVD zealots who will more adequately answer your question (and probably beat me to a pulp for not saying that the Sony or Pioneer are better ).
