Apple offers educational discounts

check with your school. At my school, they used to give discounts on Dell systems. Now, they give substantial discounts on IBM systems.

We have a student discount with Dell and IBM. However, I've found that using my student discount through dell somehow seems to create more expensive systems than if I had just gone through the home/home office division. It seems that when I go to check-out with my student account, they tack on shipping and tax, whereas right now through the home division there are no tax or shipping charges. The 5% discount doesn't even come close to balancing that.

i know IBM offers some deals for UNC students...maybe for your school also.

i called ibm today. the rep said 10% discount, i assume you have to order over the phone for that. rep couldn't tell me how long it takes to get your id for the shareholders purchase program. seems like that might be the way to go. even if it cost about 500$ you get yourself a nice retirement investment and a t40 for 1550$ (and whatever other good deals down the road).

if you are in college, see if your college offers anything.

Apple just massivly increased their educational discounts. Between that, the almost free iPod, and the free printer, it's getting hard resisting a PowerBook.

I've noticed the same thing with Dell. The prices are always much higher if you go through their supposedly discounted educational thing (plus you have to do more work to prove you're a student compared with Apple).

First of all it is very easy to resist getting a powerbook when you think of just how hindered you will be when compared to a Windows based laptop. Secondly Dell has virtually no work to prove that you are a student, you specify your school and your student number, that is all. Not too much work if you ask me.

"Hindered"? How's that? And last time I bought a Dell through the student program, it was a big pain. Maybe they made it easier now, but it used to take some effort.

Hindered by not being able to run the most widely used operating system and programs in the world. Also by paying several hundred dollars more.

Don't get a 15" powerbook until the new aluminum version comes out. Just google "titanium powerbook paint". All of my friends Powerbooks have very severe cases of paint being rubbed off.
