I don't know the year, but our first modem was a 2400 baud connected to a 486 computer. Back then, the internet was all text.

August 2 1994 Usenet posting: link

I was definitely on before then, though. I remember having to go through a complicated series of commonds to get mosaic to run on the x-terminal in my school's computer lab. The only web page that we could find was www.whitehouse.gov. I remember the first time I got the web browser working all of the people in the lab came over to see what the hell I was doing. Boy, things have changed pretty quickly.

Edit: BTW, if BBS's count (which I don't think that they should), I was logging into them as far back as 1986 with my trusty 300 baud modem.

We got a free trial of AOL on our computer when we got it. It was in the early-mid nineties. Only thing I was able to do or figure out to do was read newspaper articles and stuf. We proptly cancelled since we couldn't figure out anything else. I was like 8 or so at the time and didn't know much about computers then. My mom is a pack rat when it comes to bills. I know the invoice is around somewhere. Just not readily available and I don't feel like searching for it.

My BBS is listed here from 1994, but as I recall, I started it in 1992-93.

I recall getting some killer deals (only $400) on the first 9600 bps modems.

Around 93 some of the SysOps started getting hooked up through some "internet email gateway" nonsense... most of us thought THAT was a silly waste of time.

God I use to rack up huge telephone bills doing BBS's

lmao.... You must be too young to remember the old 2400 baud modems (and whatever was before them)

I first started chatting with people via computer to computer connections from University to University in 1986... I probably have some printouts in my mother's attic if she hasn't thrown them away.

I had a 36k modem, and I remember using Compuserve. I don't know when I was on the net first however. I've been using a computer since I was 5 (not sure but around that age)...

I kept my Hayes Optima 2400 baud modem for quite some time after I stopped using it since it was a piece of art -- tough metal case and awesome quality all around. I remember scouring Computer Shopper for the latest BBS numbers and DLing all sorts of stuff. Remember the ASCII art some places had? It's quite impressive even now.

First internet experience, if you can call it that, was some experimenting with email in France in 1993. Did some more email in late '93 and '94 in the States and then really got online in 1994 with Vanderbilt's VAX. Had fun sending spoofed emails like the one I sent my brother from Satan@hell.com.

(Killed Merlin's Pet once that way, with a level 6 or 8 character... took ages before someone managed to kill it with an even lower character )

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the only MUD I ever spent any real amount of time on. Even then, I still didn't end up with a very powerful character...

I was on the internet before this, but this is the first USENET post I made and thus one of the few things that's still archived.

EDIT: I should probably point out that I was 11 at the time.

My first e-mail was setup August 1990. Most people still had bitnet ones, and we would specify how the message would be routed. I remember I would send to UIUC, then to the real recepient. Not much else existed. I used telnet and ftp to acess mainframes I had access to. Library searches were via telnet, too.

'Powerful' was more a matter of knowledge, reputation and luck combined than anything else A bit of skill helped, but wasn't needed if you had enough knowledge.

Edit: Cause of all the memories I logged on again on NannyMUD, my wizard (Bally) and most important second char (Ysidro) still exist

I couldn't even begin to try and find posts that I made via BBS's in 93/94.

The oldest I could find in USENET was July 7, 1995 when I was stuck on AOL in Michigan. There weren't any local ISPs that I could find. It took me a good six months to find out about the freenet in my area.

Edit: It's funny. I just looked in my drawer and found the copy of Pitfall 2 for the 2600 that I paid $12 for online 10 years ago. Hard to believe it was that long ago!

Hm... either I can't remember my old login, or my character is gone.

You can search for PS/2 FAQ, the IBM one...Last-modified: 1996/02/20

but this seems about the beginning of GOOGLE

IBM PS/2 with Cyrix Cx486DRx2-40
I just finished building a system and ran comptest 2.59 on it. It is a IBM PS/2
with Cyrix Cx486DRx2-40,83D87-33, 4MB RAM, and cirrus CL-gd5426 video chipset. ...

In the LOD vs MOD hack war, I was part of that also. Altgers-TCHH/Lutz-QSD etc were the the Telenet X.25/Tymnet networks of the day....it was ARPAnet/MILnet still....no AL GORE internet .

An interesting sidenote was Kimble of kimble.org was on some of those exchanges.

I was fortunate to have a loaded Apple //e with printer and graphics cards, etc under the Christmas tree in 1983.

I did have posts under altavista I think at early as 1992....I had 'internet' posts throughout the late 80's, however; with disk space costing $1000's a MB noone saved non-financial gains.
