ODM's are a "dirty little secret" to many of the tech illeterate people out there. But then again, so are things like "interest rates" and "life"

Everyone here realizes what "niggles" has pointed out. PC "manufacturers", whether desktop or laptop, are really just assemblers of parts manufactured by other companies. Heck! Most of us have built our own PC's and already understand just how little the assembler adds to the value of the end product. This isn't anything like a "dirty little secret".

PC's are very nearly a commodity item. You buy the best combination of parts for the best price with due consideration for warranty and service.

Allow me to add on that, manfacturers like Dell don't sell computers they manfactured, they sell customerr support for computers they have assembled. Basically alot of the profit that Dell makes is of things such as their warranties and customer support...etc But most ppl don't realize that this section is where really the main profit is made.

Dude, we know you post a lot on here (average 6 posts per day), don't post any more unless you have something relevant to add.

uhh I don't own dell. (at least not anymore)
I have an Asus W3V, great laptop, but I don't agree with you.

I would LOVE to have an i9300 or an XPS Gen2, or whichever laptop they've decided to put the new go7800GTX into, as an addition (can't use it as my main as I need some mobility).

Dude stop posting on my thread. People who can't stomach with anything coming from me should stop posting on my thread. Thus, this thread will no longer be on the front page.

Shame on GM. GM can't make better cars so they buy Japanese cars and slap their logo on it?? So if you were in the market to buy: Corolla, Maxtrix, Eclipse, type cars, you would choose the ones with GM logo? GM is turning into another Dell? Look where GM is today.

Apparently you didn't get it. I was actually agreeing with you on the fact that the manufacturer of the product was more important than who brands it. If I were looking at the Pontiac Vibe / Toyota Matrix, I'd go with whatever gave me the most for my money. Isn't your point that people can buy a different brand of laptop with the same manufacturer and get a better deal? If not, what is your point? Where are your comparison laptops?

I was very defensive at that time. My apologies.

"Isn't your point that people can buy a different brand of laptop with the same manufacturer and get a better deal?"

That would be my interest in this whole thing. Hardly seems possible from all the websearching i have done. The averatecs offer alot for the money, but seem a little flimsy, the asus seem pretty good but not quite as cheap or light. Etc etc. I want something in a thin and light or ultraport, screen up to 14" but prefer under 5 lbs. My current is an 8lb compaq from Costco (6 month no Q asked return policy). The Compaq is just to big to lug around.

OK so I will throw that out there as a practical question to the original point.

PS I am not trying to add fuel to the flames here, just trying to learn something. I didn't know all this about the ODMs before, when I learned I had hopes of buying "factory direct" for a good discount, but that doesn't seem realistically doable from what I can see.

Umm the Asus that replaced my old Gateway (with good reasons) is 4.8ibs with 8 cell battery, 14in wxga bright and glossy, and like the averatecs , it has a function to play media with out loading windows, and built like a tank. THe barebone $540. My config is under $900. It takes a little work to built, but it's worth it, with satisfaction.
you are welcome to check out my review of this laptop here:

Wow that's nice, I just wish I had the expertise to build something like that!

BTW when I talked to Eddie at geared2play, I think he said the bare-bones weight was 4.8, but the optical drive would take it up to 5.5lbs. With an 80G HD, Centrino 1.73, 1G RAM, a car charger and a DVDRW it came up to around $1250. Actually sounds like a pretty good deal now that I look at it.

What about the comment someone made about the AOpen model that was the same as the Dell 700m? Is that the same kind of deal where you build it yourself? Cuz I didn't actually see anything for sale at that website, just specs. http://solution.aopen.com.tw/products/nb/default.htm

I am leaning toward buying from Costco again, just for the 6 month no questions asked return policy, any reason, even "I don't like it". Mostly they are all preconfigured there, no chance to add extra RAM, etc.

OK I am way way over my head in this discussion already.

PS Just surfing for AOpen I found an interesting page with various "build it yourself" instructions for laptops. Interesting but I would NEVER attempt this myself!

Hope this isn't too off topic.

THanks. It's actually pretty essay to build your own laptop. It is like putting expensive legos together, and it's getting to be more like desktops.
The hardest part is to find and deciding the lowest prices and total shipping cost, etc. G2G support their products, and people post good experiences with them, which is a big plus.
As for the weight, I forgot to mention that I did not purchase the optical drive. Also, the optical drive on those things can be taking off or swapped like a battery.
Nice find on the build it yourself link!

I'm currently repairing a Latitude D600. It's a miserable excuse for a laptop; the design uses a lot of off-the-shelf parts and is assembled rather haphazardly. I don't know who made it, but it's garbage.
My current laptop is also a Dell. I'm hoping to sell it in the near future in favor of something that does'nt suck.

My 700m was made by a consortium of imps that snuck out of my old Gateway 486SX25 during a late nite session of the original DOOM demo. As soon as I found this out i left out rat poison for them to eat. They all died except for one. After a furious 8 hour interrogation with the lone survivor, he finally admitted that his name was Michael Dell, and his plans for world domination were thwarted by my rat poison and that pesky first step of the basement stairs that did not allow them to escape for all these years. He was impressed with the pace of technology since the early 90's when he snuck out of the ole Gateway. Hell it didn't even have a sound card! He was very disappointed in the fact that Western Digital does not make video cards anymore as he got a great deal on 1mb VESA cards right before he joined forces with ID and was forced into big pixel 320X200 hell, where the hell do I get drivers for that thing now, he says as he pulls out a BFG and blows his head off.
