MPlayer and the Zone. Good times. What sucks is some multiplayer games now have worse interfaces and are a bigger pain in the ass to join a game than we had back then.

Oh my fuck I had forgot about MPlayer until just now. :awe:

Yeah, definitely good times, just figuring out the Internet and online gaming (must've been 1997-1998? not sure)!

Wasn't the zone a place with multiplayer game rooms for things like chess and backgammon?

Mplayer was lots of fun before the turn of the century. I used to play Duke Nukem Plutonium (recently got it working again on DOSBOX) using SOB BOT as the artificial intelligence opponent.

Then there were the chat rooms....lots of fun there too. You had public rooms and private rooms. People took turns controlling the mic and most of the time you had people berating other people and it was pretty funny. If you did not like the person who was in control of the room, especially if they hogged the mic, you could run a secret command that caused a buffer overflow and boot everyone else out but yourself. There was another hack that made everyone's floppy drive spin! It was so fun.

MS put out a patch for Windows 98 to stop this. A few months Mplayer was on its deathbed. :'(

The Zone was also a great place to play the ORIGINAL MW3, as in Mechwarrior 3. Multiplayer games were lots of fun. You had about 8 to 10 mechs playing on teams in a battle to the death or free for all.

I just used the chat rooms back then. I remember it was one of the first to have vid and voice chat. I remember DJ. Up-rock would be spinning and he get all the girls to get naked on cam fun times. He is still the best DJ I ever heard.

It was pretty empty on mplayer and the owner/programmers had an open chat room to get ideas on how to make Mplayer popular again. I was in the room for like an hour and it was apparent the owners/programers had no clue what they were doing. Mplayer kind of died and I think everyone moved to paltalk.
