From what I've read, Afterburner is limited to the Overdrive limits. You need to use the super secret launch flag (-xcl) to have Afterburner increase the clock limits of Overdrive.

Gonna give that a shot. Thanks so much virge!

edit: worked! I was so used to using afterburner with my 580s, sapphire trixx just didn't feel "right"

Can you elaborate please? I have mine coming tomorrow and would like to get past CCC limits. What is -xcl?

Those were going for $600 on newegg when I checked last night. $1200 for two video cards? I thought I was bat-$ht insane for dropping $380 on the 5870 when it first came out. How does one justify this purchase? GCN for computing? 3-6 monitor setup? I'm not judging, I genuinely want to know (so I can use it on my wife ).

I spent $750 on 1 Nvidia FX5900 videocard when they first came out... this ones chump change and 50 times faster.

2 choices:

You can download sapphire trixx off the sapphire website or you can download the new MSI afterburner beta from Guru3d.com.

Sapphire trixx does the same thing but I prefer afterburner.

You need to use the command line argument -xcl to unlock the clockspeed limit, though. (for afterburner)

Got my 7970 today. Not fully stable @ 1125mhz core stock voltage for me, minor flickering textures in The Witcher 2. Same thing at 1100mhz. Had to drop down to 1075mhz.

Don't think it's heat related, was getting 65 C under load (I set manual fan @ 60 %)

Yeah, going to give that a try tomorrow...

What are you using to monitor temps? I started high overclocks to bit mine and had to set a customized fan profile in Sapphire Trixx. I also tested in gaming. Trixx wasn't ramping the fan fast enough because wasn't registering the temp fast enough. I was locking < 50 C on the program, which is ridiculous. Set a new profile with more aggressive ramping and no lock ups.

Afterburner, 7970 compatible version is here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/MSI-Afterburner-2.2.0-Beta-10-download-2839.html#download

I just ordered a Visiontek 7970 from tigerdirect. It's the only other card that has a lifetime warrenty except for the XFX black edition.

Can finally confirm I got mine up and running. Using 7900 drivers and for now a small OC to 1050/1500.

I was trying to max it out at first (CCC max), but games were crashing pretty quickly, so I need to find out what needs to be tweaked.

Did have BF3 running and checked to see 1.5G of VRAM was being used via Eyefinity.

You may need to use manual fan and a custom voltage to up to 1125+. You should be able to hit it with ease with MSI afterburner, just find the fan speed / voltage that hits your sweet spot.

Lifetime warranty for something I never keep longer than 2 years is 100% pointless, to me anyway.

i'm a DC punk... i run them til they die or catch on fire (really happened once). They crunch for me. I've got several systems with several gpus in each.

but my main gaming rig i have 2 GTX480 on water. the 7970 will go into my main productivity rig.... on water of course

I saw some thread about you being back and active on the TeAm, is that true?

I am seriously pissed that I asked for amazon gift cards for christmas and not for newegg...

Amazon 7970 stock is horrible and has not been good at all since launch.

I got lucky and grabbed a couple sapphires from there. But they sold out ridiculously fast, I couldn't believe it....didn't have much stock at all I'm guessing

Really? I thought they still did?

It seems to have ended with the 6000 series athough some 7000's have a single lifetime and some have a two year.

"
How long does this limited warranty last?
The limited hardware warranty for Graphics Cards lasts for a time period of two years.
Which products are eligible for a limited lifetime hardware warranty?
The following Graphics Cards are eligible for an extension of the standard two-year limited hardware warranty:
1. XFX Radeon HD 7000 Series Dual Fan (Double Dissipation Edition) Graphics Cards with Ghost Technology; a floating cover design that maximizes airflow by creating exceptional venting throughout the card.
2. XFX Radeon HD 7000 Series Graphics Cards with 10-digit model numbers ending in “R” (example: “FX-797A-TDFR”)
3. XFX Radeon HD 6000, HD 5000, and HD 4000 Series Graphics Cards
4. XFX GeForce GT 520, GT 430, 200, 9000, 8000, 7000, 6000 Series Graphics Cards purchased after April 17, 2007.
If you register any of the specified products noted above online at http://www.xfxforce.com/ within 30 days of purchase, your limited warranty will be EXTENDED for the duration of your life. Registration within 30 days of the date of purchase is a condition precedent to receiving the lifetime warranty.***
The limited hardware warranty on all XFX-branded products begins on the date of the packing slip, invoice, or receipt. A copy of the dated original invoice/receipt must be submitted to verify warranty repair or replacement. In circumstances where the transaction record is not available or reasonably verifiable (based on date of manufacture), the warranty period shall begin on the date of manufacture of the product.
*** The limited warranty for XFX Limited Edition graphics cards lasts for a period of two years and is non-transferable.
How long is the limited warranty on a replacement product (after RMA)?
The standard warranty period is not extended if we repair or replace a warranted product or any parts. However, if the original product is properly registered under the lifetime warranty program, a replacement card that is issued within the first two years of the warranty period will also receive the benefit of the limited lifetime warranty coverage. A third replacement within the first two years of the original warranty period will disqualify the lifetime warranty coverage for the original owner—and will default to the following coverage for the replacement item:
Within 2 years of warranty start date:
2 years limited warranty
After 2 years from warranty start date:
1 year limited warranty
XFX may change the availability of limited hardware warranties, at its discretion, but any changes will not be retroactive.
May I transfer the limited hardware warranty?
The limited hardware warranty for selected Graphics Cards may only be transferred to one owner after the original owner.*** The following Graphics Cards are eligible:
1. ALL XFX Radeon HD 6000, HD 5000, HD 4000 Series Graphics Cards
2. XFX GeForce GT 520, GT 430, 200, 9000, 8000, 7000, 6000 Series Graphics Cards purchased after April 17, 2007"
