Not exactly selling like hotcakes. Not looking good for amd.

Sarcasm? Reports were that initial 7970 stock quantities were quite plentiful compared to previous AMD GPU launches. If I was the kind of person to buy launch halo cards I'd personally wait for the custom cooler models, doubt I'm alone in that reasoning.

Dude, are you serious? Newegg had over 1000 sapphire cards in stock , and they sold out in 2 hours last night. This morning, they got another HUGE shipment. This does not compare to the GTX 480 situation where they had less than 100 boards. They will tell you stock if you call them, or you can somewhat track it on newegg business.

Sure would of been easy to snag a 7970 every time I checked. Usually a new product launch results in sellouts in minutes at most. Hell the 5XXX series were out of stock basically for a few months. I'll bet the 680 launch will be quite the opposite. It's kinda sad that AMD prices themselves out of the market. At $550 most are willing to wait on Kepler myself included.

There we go. Is this type of crap really needed? We get it. You love nvidia. You hate AMD. Thanks for sharing. I never have, and still do not understand brand loyalty, i'll buy whatever is new and fast from either company. Going out of your way to defend "your" company is pretty ridiculous.

Must be the nvidia focus group trying to stir something again.

I'm not a nvidia focus group member. It'd take more than a free video card for me to sit here and shill for nvidia.
If I think AMD was greedy and priced themselves out of the market I'm gonna say it.

Its priced cheaper than the 3gb GTX 580.(589.99 MSRP) So does this apply to nvidia? Or just AMD?

I didn't snag one. No need for one as my current card sits at idle most of the time. Just can't get into gaming anymore.

For those who did tho it looks like they have a new driver set available. Shows updated today so I'm not sure if it was just the page or it's a new set of drivers.

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/radeon-7900-series.aspx

I guess if I did pick one up tho I'd try the drivers in the link first.

I hope your going to enjoy ATI CCC driver hell. I guarantee you issues, left and right.... ATI AMD can't make drivers and they never could make drivers even in ALL IN WONDER days,,, corrupt desktop driver issues,, going from one driver to another blue screen,, suddenly FPS is cut in half,, uninstalll install again,, ooops CCC error ,, jack dont work! I learned my lesson with driver issues from x800 days and their still got their interns programming the drivers.. GL ,, ull need it. and you got no phsyx or cuda . Why you think ATI is red,, its the devil himself!

You do realize that at this stage all the cards that are being sold, bar 2 XFX models, ARE REFERENCE DESIGN from the same supplier? I have never heard a bad word about HIS anyway, they're just not a tier 1 AIB in the US.

"Every time I checked there was stock" is such a poor gauge of sales that it's self-refuting. Well, every time I checked it was out of stock so there, my meaningless sampling trumps your meaningless sampling! Another way to interpret availability on launch day is that AMD did a good job of getting supply to retailers. Scarcity can be a sign of a bad launch and decent supply can be an accomplishment. Which one was this launch? I dunno and neither do you.

I bet if all sites sold out immediately, you would be damning AMD for poor supply and how this is a paper launch and/or trumpeting it as proof of poor yields. When supply is reasonably okay and persistent folks can get a card, you tout it as a sign the launch is a failure. Funny, folks being able to buy on launch day at a price pretty close to suggested price is a GOOD THING in my book. But for you, it's damned if they do, damned if they don't. Whatever.

No one outside retailers and AMD knows how the cards sold. We'll know eventually but until then, why not just be happy that a new GPU process has been launched after a long period where nothing much happened and that people will soon be playing with shiny new toys? Sheesh, I do not get the need to dump on everything.

Jealousy, no life, need to do it to feel superior because they don't get that feeling working the counter at McD's, and on and on. In the end, just acting like a little spoiled brat.....

It was a nightmare of a card, yet you had it for 3 years?

I honestly don't get all the whine about drivers. I had both nV and ATi for years, and never had an issue with either.

I remember when Catalyst drivers used to be really bad, I had swapped my Geforce 4ti 4200 for a 9800 pro and nearly had to reinstall windows...but, AMD/ATI drivers have really improved recently to the point where I'm willing to say that they are almost on Par with Nvidia. I just did a motherboard swap with 2 HD5870's from two 8800GTs and a Nforce 750a board. It couldn't have gone easier.

The Catalyst driver problems are really overblown and I you would have to go back to the times of the X800 and X1800 in order to find a problem in ATi's driver, atleast a fatal flaw. I think Nvidia still makes a better driver then ATi but it really isn't as bad as it once was.

BTW, I am not going to pay that much for a video card, when I got two 5870s in Crossfire X for less then $300(In 2004 I paid $325 for a single 6800GT so I view this as a bargain). Sigh, I hope this card isn't pointing that things are going back to the way they were about 6 years ago where everything commanded a high price. I'm big fan of the Flashing, overclocking and modding community. I have a pair of GTX 465 flashed to GTX 470s and I would say it was a great purchase for $400 for the pair of them(still running those). It also doesn't make sense to me why people buy cards every generation. Going from a pair of 8800GT's to a pair of HD5870 cards or 9800GTs to GTX470s makes sense cause the leap in performance is worth the buy. But to go from a 6970 to a 7970 just doesn't make sense. Unless your board isn't crossfire capable or you already have two 6970 cards and want to go to 7970s it makes more sense just to pick up another 6970, I mean if you like ATi you would still be supporting them.

When the card drops below $300 give me a call but you guys are literally spending Professional card prices for a gaming card.

Some people don't want the heat, hassle and microstutter that come with Sli/Crossfire. Hooking up two mid-range cards will always be better bang for your buck, if you're willing to deal with game profiles and the like, because you don't have to pay the halo card premium.

Also hardware enthusiasts just like new and shiny things to play with

As long as the game manufacturers are willing to have a few tweaked settings that destroy performance, you'll have people thinking you need magnitudes more processing power to run games on a PC than on a console.

Now, before people start jumping in with, "...but they look better on a PC". I know they do. They could look 90% as good though and run perfectly on a mid-range card with some optimizing. It's not like it can't easily be done. We have multiple industries though, built around us buying newer and more powerful electronics, with more features. So, the mentality becomes, "I want to be able to crank everything to 11!" There is stuff they can do with ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadow maps, shaders, ray-tracing, volumetric lighting, etc... that would bring the HD 7970 in quad crossfire to FPD (frames per day ) instead of FPS. It's so much easier to do to rather than actually making the games better to play and they get industry support to do it. Imagine a review site testing "optimal playable settings" rather than "maximum playable settings". You'll never see it happen, because that won't sell games or equipment to geeks.

Those were going for $600 on newegg when I checked last night. $1200 for two video cards? I thought I was bat-$ht insane for dropping $380 on the 5870 when it first came out. How does one justify this purchase? GCN for computing? 3-6 monitor setup? I'm not judging, I genuinely want to know (so I can use it on my wife ).

I ordered two Sapphires from newegg and should have them in my grubby little hands tonight.

This is the first time I've bought a non-nvidia card and I do expect some driver issues (looking at you skyrim 2560x1600), but I also expect them to get worked out soon.

Ideally, by this weekend

Maybe this will end up being a 'learning experience', but hopefully I'll just get some sweet gaming on!
