Once ISPs start sending out warning messages to people using torrents, they will flock back to usenet.

Obviously you don't have a clue about what you speak. People using TPB, yes. Private trackers, not a chance.

Besides if you're already paying $10-15 a month for Usenet you can pay the same or even much less for VPN and not worry about it any way.

Usenet is to newsgroups what the world wide web is to webpages.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

And there are many providers

http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/usenet-providers.html

The problem is that the evil empires are now aware of Usenet and submit DMCA take-down notices to all of them.

Basically all of them suck now, they will all have things taken down eventually if a DMCA take-down notice is submitted. Some are slower than others, as mentioned and some things just aren't noticed, like TV shows. However that is more because networks mostly don't care more then they don't notice.

I was certainly overstating it a bit when I said it was dead. But it is dying and anyone who doesn't see that is just living in the glory years of Usenet. Even with providers much slower to pull material due to DMCA requests are still doing it eventually making a lot of older material much more difficult to find. Why you would pay a service for that pleasure is beyond me, but to each their own

Not all content is DMCA.

There is still well over 90% of content.

I used to use Usenet to download the Stern show when I lived in areas where it was not on the radio. Since I no longer really like the show, and have Sirius, I have not used Usenet in years and have discontinued my subscription to Giganews.

Before the blizzard of takedowns, newsgroups were great for two reasons:

1. Full speed downloads of anything uploaded in the ~2.5 years. No need to worry about seeds.

2. No ratios. Just leech as much as you want.

It is still like that.

Exactly, I´ve had no problems since I bought a "block" from a secondary usenet provider to fill in whatever gets taken down from my main unlimited provider.

Also, it is quite easy to configure TV shows to download as soon as they are available on indexing sites so that you get them before they are taken down on even the most "DMCA friendly" providers.

Well I am talking about providers with very few DMCA or very slow removing!

What's slow in your book? Most of the US providers seem to have automated takedowns, resulting in removal after a few hours.

Even the Dutch providers seem to be affected and so it's hard to grab anything more than a few weeks old.

The takedowns removes one of the major advantages of newsgroups over BT.
