I find all you need is one subscription to one of the "mainstream" providers (someone reselling Highwinds, etc.) and then another to some random overseas one. Mainstream gets you 85% of what you need, weirdo off-brand one gets you the rest. With programs like sabnzbd it's not even difficult, just add another server as a backup.

I'm dont know why someone would subscribe to two services. If you needed the second service, there is no point in keeping the first one. The DMCA notices did seem to shift the marketplace. I recently the ditched provider I had for the last few years, and I know I wasn't alone. If I was a sneaky European usenet provider, I would submit DCMA notices to my competitors, even though I have no right to, because the notices are not verified and automatically processed. Good way to jumpstart your business.

I pay €70/year for a seedbox that doubles as an OpenVPN server, which is cheaper than what I am spending on usenet. Just VPN is cheaper, but I plan on using the server for other things. If it wasnt for sickbeard, I would ditch usenet.

haven't used usenet in ages.

between Netflix and Hulu, I pirate very little anymore (although I do have my DVR prioritize shows that I can't stream online)... the only real impetuous for my pirating in the first place was to watch shows that I couldn't (eg: pre-DVR, when I worked night shifts, I'd have to pirate everything unless I wanted to not watch shows until the summer season reruns)

I feel there's no point in following the first rule since nzbmatrix went down. That and all the takedowns. But I still don't talk about it, except to friends.

People who openly talked about usenet, sab, sickbeard, automation, etc. while believing that usenet is so resilient/law-proof are the reason for takedowns and the eventual closing of popular sites.
