Anand is a year younger than me and I remember posting in threads he was also commenting on in the CPU sub groups
DMCA overrules usenet now at least on American providers. Though they always miss a few.
What is the point of Usenet when you can google everything with what you want + the word 'torrent' in 4 seconds?

Usenet's primary use is for piracy. Nobody I know uses it for legitimate discussion anymore. Web forums and social network sites have taken their place.
All I know is the UFC found out about usenet 3 months ago, and I keep hoping they forget every month, but they seem to keep remembering.
Yep, I still use it for various things but it's nowhere near what it used to be.
Seems the European lawsuits against file sharing have even effected media offerings.
The largest new server in Europe got shut down a while back. Then Andrew Cuomo pressured most American ISPs into dropping Usenet .
But it's still growing, just not as fast as it use to.
That's the idea. I started posting the "first rule" thing here in 2001 IIRC.
people don't use the usenet for dicussions anymore. it's primarily used to host files.
Overrules? Not quite. You know who gets the most take down notices? Google. Some usenet providers are much more susceptible to take downs than others...Highwinds for example.
Well, that used to be a good way.
HERE is another reason not to use torrents.
Fact is, there's no advantage of torrents over usenet. Can you connect to a torrent swarm via SSL? Not to every seeder, no. You can with usenet. Usenet also doesnt depend on seeders. Once its up, its up. You dont have to seed with usenet. You can max out your bandwidth with usenet. Even with a large swarm I couldnt download a 12 gig movie in under 45 minutes. I can with usenet.
But, in the end, its your choice
You get bad files far more often with usenet. With torrents, if it has thousands of seeds and lots of upvotes, you can be pretty confidant it's a good file.
My experiences have been the opposite. YMMV I guess.
What's a good usenet anyhow, I have never even tried to use usenet.
i dont really see the point in paying a monthly fee for usenet when you could just use that money to go buy the legit media
