Best shaves I get are with a straight razor so that doesn't surprise me. Anyone with a thick beard must go through the same shit I do where a disposable razor lasts at best 3 shaves before I have to change the blade. That's being generous since the first shave is the only one that cuts close.

i disagree, ive had straight razor shaves from a few barbers and honestly they sucked. they hurt from pulling the hair and was not anywhere as close as a what a mach3 can do.

Back in the 90's Gilette... I think... used to sell this bottle of shaving soap with a brush applicator. You'd squeeze the soap up through the brush and use it to lather up. I really liked it, but I guess it didn't sell well as I don't see them anymore.

I bought a badger haired shaving brush when I was 24 that cost $80. It makes a nicer lather than from a can of barbasol.

Try a different barber. A good barber makes a world of difference. The bad part is that the best ones I've found were not in the USA.

Then the barbers you got them from weren't good. They probably don't do them often enough to keep their skills practiced. There's literally no difference between a straight razor and a Mach3 in terms of how close they'll shave you. It might take more passes with a single bladed razor, but that's the only difference.

I love a good hot shave soap/cream applied with brush, but I don't have the time for them that often.

I have a mach 3 that I used before my straight razor and the straight shaves me much much closer than the mach 3. I get a 5 oclock shadow on the same day from the mach 3 but with the straight I can go an extra day.

Its definitely a closer shave for me and I dont need to shave as often. Go examine a straight razor that is sharpened to the level it should be. It's like shaving with a precise scalpel.

The straight razor goes under the skin to the roots.

/taps sarcasm meter. Is this thing working?

Just in case: Unless you enjoy that undead, bleeding everywhere look, it's not likely you're shaving all the way in to your dermis.

Norelco lift-n-cut though, now there's a recipe for razor bumps.

oh wish i seen that. mine is getting worn out.

I love my DE blade. its cheap and i get just as good a shave. buying a 100 blades for $20 is great.

my favorite shaver though is a 1921 Gem JR. its a single blade design but it has a really huge handle its great with my arthritis.

User error.

Wish I would have seen it, I wouldn't mind a new/spare brush or two.
