I never check the Play store for apps, just the gaming section. Outside of the browser and email client, I dont use apps besides games. I was curious how common this might be

What do you actually do with your phone then?
I need my podcast app, my streaming radio app, my tapatalk, my twitter. Doing that all through the browser would be silly.

I only need the basics most of the time. Calendar, mail, and news. And I dont often check news.

I got about 300 free games from Amazon but most I havent even played.

Aside from communication apps (phone/email/chat) Dropbox is my most used app. Then Google Music and MX Player. Also Google Maps, Twitter, Flipboard, and the Browser.

I use my phone for calling, texting and playing music. Anything else is used sporadically.

I have the HTC 3D Evo and only app I downloaded was the checkers game. I rarely play it but sometimes its nice to have it. When I got this phone (Its the 3rd one, other 2 died before contract was up) I downloaded some apps but I think it made things worse so this time I'm just using the original un upgraded apps that came with phone. I seem to have less phone problems. Also once I up graded a app I started to get constant messages to upgrade it and other apps. Its like constant soliciting. My contract was up in May. Time to get something new but I'm still mulling it over. Between a Samsung S4 or the HTC One I think.

What do you use dropbox for? I know you mentioned 10gb of transfers per day or something, but I really don't get that. Don't get me wrong. I use Dropbox, but I find it's more common for sharing photos with my friends (like a RAR file) or whatever, which only happens like once a month or something. Certainly very little mobile interaction. The last time I used it on mobile was maybe because I needed a quick way to upload my lab work without using a USB stick. I copied to Dropbox and opened on my phone to show my friend some images and that was it.

Twitter, Facebook, my banking app and Weatherbug are the only non stock apps I use semi regularly. The rest I use but not terribly often. I also keep a small handful of more casual games.

I use most of the stock apps.

I've had my Android phone about a month and I have downloaded use a bunch of apps already. Not including games, apps that I don't frequently use, or the apps that I have on my "to download" list:

Wifi Analyzer, Speed Test, Music, Calculator, Waze, QR Droid, JoeVLC, TV (HTC's Remote), CamScanner, Google Earth, GPS Status, Firefox, BatteryGuru, A1 SD Bench, Google Maps, Adobe Reader, Voice Recorder, Google Sky Map, Noise Meter, Gmail, MySword, Pandora, Google Drive, Amazon Appstore (for the free app a day), Google Play Music, YouTube, Nook, Amazon Kindle, Google Authenticator, Advanced Task Killer, MX Player, SkyDrive, File Manager, Calendar, Fitbit, Relax M.P., Alarm Clock Xtreme Free, SASurvival, Audible, PowerAmp, mail.com, Google Plus, and SwiftKey.

Double the list for the Windows Phone apps I use.
There are plenty of users who have far more apps than I do, but this is just a start.

Day to day I use email, IE, texting, calendar, HTC Hub (weather), maps, search (Bing), Zune, flashlight, jiTalk (google talk client).

Office, Skydrive, MyRadar, Metrotalk (GV client), Keyring, get used occasionally. Some games, and a few more I can't remember apparently.

Count me as one of "those people". Google Maps was critical to navigating a foreign city for the first time, but other than that it's strictly an email, web, text, phone, and music device. And half the time I just whistle the music instead of playing it.

Then again, I had the same dumbphone from 2001 to March of this year, so maybe I'm just a twenty-something luddite.

i know lots of old people with smartphone. they dont use it for anything except making phone calls. funny thing is, they can barely dial or make a call. seeing how they press the "button" it's apparent they think they are pressing a physical button because of how hard they press down.

Just a few things I use on my phone:

Timecode calculator for quickly adding up editing runtimes- saves me a ton of time with work. I remember when a decent standalone TC calc cost buko bucks. Now it's a free app.

Tip Calc, Unit Converter, various other calcs... 'cause I suck at math.

CamScanner. Love this thing for quick scanning documents, checks, any info I need to save while on the go.

IP Cam Viewer: IP camera lets my wife and I view our son anywhere, right on our phones, and no need for the dedicated babycams.

Sketchbook Mobile- for quick sketches, jotting down ideas, layouts, etc.

Note Everything but recently switched to Flick Note; synchs my Scrivener writing projects with Simplenote. I can make edits and changes right on my phone, synch is taken care of.

S-Note I now use all the time- pops up on S-Pen removal.

Jump Desktop lets me remote-manage my home and work machines.

Shazam & SoundHound- got both either free or a 10-cent sale. Thought I'd never need these, but I'm amazed how many times either has come in uber-handy. Once had a producer call me asking, "What was that (temp) music used in this sequence, we want to get that for the final." HellifIknow- but SoundHound did, no problem. Been a bunch of times I've been out, heard a track I actually liked, and was able to easily ID it.

Aldiko Reader- not only for books, but it also the fastest PDF reader I've yet seen, so I use it for reading storyboards and scripts. Also Kindle, ComicRack, Marvel,

Dropbox- in-freakin-valuable. I pretty much save/cross-synch everything to DB- FinalCut project files, writing and editing projects, work PDF files etc. etc. I have everything redundantly backed up (including on my home server) instantly.

All the usual apps in the car: dock, BeyondPod, local/online audio players, GPS nav/info etc.

The usual entertainment apps: Netflix, YT, DicePlayer, N7Player, Dsub (for streaming from my subsonic server) etc.

Browsers, FTP, email, the usual web-stuff.

Photo/video taking apps, QuickPic, usual media apps.

Google Calendar and Tasks, synched with other schedule/task/alarm apps.

Mint.com to keep track of finances. (I love seeing *exactly* how much my wife just spent pop up right on my phone so I can send her a snarky message before she's even out of the store). Also stock apps.

Pulse, Flipboard, Currents, various news/info aggregators.

All the usual communication apps: dialer, contacts, Voicemail+, MightyText, etc. etc.

Tons of games and emulators.

Various system tools, backup, customization etc.

I'm always open to new apps that make my phone even more useful/entertaining/valuable to me.

I have to say, I don't understand how some people can go on endless eye-glazing rants on phone spec minutia... then turn around and use one like a dumbphone. What's the point?

I use some apps a lot but I could never get into any app seriously as I change out my main phones every 6-10 months and dont have them long enough to really explore them the way I should. Hell, in the last 18 months I had an S2, S3, Droid Razr, iphone 5 and an S4.

I love my apps. I mostly use your social networking apps.. fb, twitter, tapatalk, etc. Also have a bunch of sports related apps.. flipbook, baconreader for toilet reading. I stream music/radio daily. Don't really play games - only candy crush. Doing any of these through the browser stinks - and it's totally inconvenient

I watch video - TV and movies - on my phone, so Dropbox is how I get them from my computer to my phone (and vice versa). I also upload every camera shot, and use it for file transferring in general. I also store some music and other things like wallpapers and ringtones, as well .apk files for things I don't need right away but want to have access to. Oh and it also acts as my backup for various files and folders.

Dropbox is probably one of the big reasons why I can't go iOS. Things like exporting and opening any file type are important features to me.

My wife and my mother-in-law use nothing but the basic apps (phone, mail, text, web, contacts, camera). My wife uses the Music app.

On their phones, the sports app and games are purely for the kids of the family (mine and my sister-in-law's).

On a fairly regular basis, I will use banking and finance apps, wifi apps, Boxcar, SplashID, FindMyFriends, MacNewsDaily, Y! Sports (formerly Sportsactular), Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Woot!, YouTube, YardSale, CraigsPro, DropBox, LogMeIn, WatchESPN, SportsNet, Amazon, iHeartRadio, Shazam, DirecTV, Netflix, Y! Weather, iTommyCam, Mammoth (for the webcams), ThePopeApp (for the webcams), Abbey Road, Waze, Starbucks and many games.

At first I was thinking 'yeah I don't use any apps' then I got to looking and realized I've accumulated quite a stable of apps and depend on them when I need it, just not everyday stuff.

Tech Stuff
Ping & DNS
Traceroute
X2 Remote Desktop Client

Utilities
Compass
Conversion Calculator
Barcode Scanner
File Explorer
Instant Heart Rate
Speed Test
Tesla LED
Translate
Wifi Mouse

Shopping
Amazon
Amazon Appstore
Newegg

Custom Widgets
Eye in the Sky
Pure Grid Calendar
Opotech Wallpaper apps

About a dozen games that come and go plus other entertainment like a kindle reader, pulse news, google music.

Technically my BB Curve is a smartphone lol but I've never used a single app. I just don't do anything with my phone aside from text and call. Anytime I'm at work or at home, I've got a 'real' computer available anyway, and when I'm going out I just don't find myself needing to (nor wanting to ) 'compute' anything. Eventually I'll probably use my phone as my GPS and once smartphone storage improves (like, to the point of the better part of 200GB) I wouldn't mind using it as my primary music device, but that's really all that comes to mind for me.

My smartphone has two primary missions. 1. A telephone when I travel. 2. A Verizon hotspot for Internet access for my laptop when I travel. I have little interest in or time for apps.
