Some people use keyboard on the lap, because when you travel your lap is always the same height whereas desk heights change.

Just reading the first post here got me wondering:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2219483

RMB to go forward? Thats a new one... How many others have a weird setup like this?

Im an arrow keys user and although im vastly outnumbered by the wasd peeps arrow key users arent that uncommon.

Anyone use those numpad arrows to move about? Just noticed they existed

yea i've used that since the doom days, only a few games won't let you do it.
it's just so much easier for me to use rmb instead of an arrow key or something

I didn't play a lot of Doom, but I did play a ton of Wolf3D.

I used the arrow keys and I think shift for fire. IIRC the same setup was enabled by default in Doom and I continued to use that, but at some point I started using the mouse to strafe in Doom I/II.

I also used a Gravis gamepad for Wolf3D and for a short while used a Logitech Wingman Warrior (at the time I was pretty enthused about the spinning wheel for strafing). I think I still have it sitting in a closet somewhere. Still kinda intrigued by that thing.

Today, I have long since given up on the arrow keys, and all other widgets and have used WSAD since Quake.

I used to use arrows for FPSes, I use WASD these days, though. There was an odd period where I couldn't use anything but arrow keys for Half-Life and mods like Counter-Strike/TFC, but I was fine using WASD in Quake 3, WoW, etc.

The arrow keys setup was weird in itself as I had my grenades set to KP_END and KP_PGDN, with control for duck and shift for walk. So if, for example, I wanted to prime my secondary grenade, duck and move at the same time, I had to contort my hand in weird ways.

Actually weirder than that is when I first started playing Quake 2, I used the mouse to move around - as in, you swept the mouse forward to go forward, back to go back, etc. That was quite acceptable in those days when most people didn't know what the hell mouselook was, or that you could duck.

I also most definitely always invert my mouse for an FPS. It makes a ridiculous amount more sense than not.

I'm used to my late 90's config for FPS:

WSAD: movement,
LMB: primary fire
RMB: jump
M3: alt fire/sights/zoom.
Scroll wheel/1-6: weapon select
Q: quick switch / last weapon
E/Spacebar: Use
R: reload
F: Grenade
Ctrl: Duck/Crouch
Shift: Sprint/Walk
T/Y: Chat/team chat
G,Z,X,C,V,B: Game specific

Although I've started trying out RMB for alt fire and space for jump lately b/c I just picked up a G500 mouse and M3 is hard to use without accidentally hitting the scroll wheel

I've got a logitec g13 strapped to the left arm of the desk chair and my mouse sits on a low cabinet on my right. That way the controls come to me instead of me leaning forward and going to them.

way back when the original UT was the rage, one my my clan mates played with LMB being forward and RMB being backwards and using keyboard buttons for primary & secondary fire

also during UT's time, I used the play with the arrow keys for movement and used the surrounding keyboard buttons for hotkeys

I have no idea how I played like that since I've become accustomed to WASD and trying to play on the arrow keys just feels lacking/awkward.

you would need a crowbar to seperate me and my challenger pro. ideally a responsible user of one.. like gordon freeman XD. i dont use any odd key combo's per say but i do tend to rework many of the keys beyond movement ones. sometimes wiring a few to my hotkeys

I'm looking for anyone else who plays jets with WASD + arrow keys (BF3). I want to reconfigure somehow so that I can look around the aircraft without switching my right hand to mouse.

I use LMB forward, RMB backwards. CTRL and shift for primary and secondary fire. <> for strafe. and so on as needed....I have used this since quake DM and original team fortress. I tried to convert to WASD and I just can't do it.

I was one of those few people who appreciated the addition of mouse support in Doom. I told my buddies this was the way of the future and they laughed at me.

Not exactly unusual but I use Nostromo N52 + Logitech G9 mouse for gaming.

I will never play any PC game without this setup (not only because I don't want to, but because I won't be able to anymore ).

I'm on the same boat. I've been using the N52 for a few years now. Would be a difficult transition to go back to just the keyboard.

I use sdfc for movement.

Been using it since quake 1. Probably wont ever change.

heck, I bought some game not that long ago, and it wouldnt let me remap the c key to move backwards, and never actually got around to playing the game because of it. I just can't adapt to anything else :\

The game doesn't allow us to rebind keys? No problem, I'll rebind my N52 keys to get it work the way I wanted.

Same here. If I need to, I change the in game settings to match what's on my N52. That way everything I do is the same in every game. I use razor mouse though, like the flat feel of it. Had to exchange my mouse at work for a razor as well, things were just to slow on the stock dell one they gave us.
