Personally, i have never bothered with Microsoft Outlook. One reason is that i have never bothered to install it fully and mess around with it. Am I missing out on some good apps? Should i take the time to see what Outlook is all about, or is it not worth it?

If you do use it, what parts of it are the best?

It's really more for businesses. Robust calendaring and tasks and public folders. Aside from that, for home, I can only think of the anti-spam in Outlook 2003 and being able to setup more complicated rules would constitute the only real minor advantages.

If you are talking about use at home, please go with Thunderbird and the calendar add-in, Outlook is well known for introducing security holes and other problems. Leave it uninstalled.

outlook's calendar portion is actually quite good...besides it syncs with a lot of different devices. Sunbird is no where near that yet.

I use it because I have my phone synced to it, before that it was also because the place I worked at used Exchange. Thunderbird and addons + third party sync programs CAN give you the functionality, but considering that the I already have Outlook (included in Office), the software (dl from Sony Ericcson) and cable (included with phone) I'm hard pressed to find a good reason.

I use it for everything like contacts, mail, news, notes, and other stuff. Great program as far as I'm concerned.

I have Outlook full installed simply for the calendar functionality. It really is a great way to keep yourself organized.

I love Outlook 2003, I use it for home use. I like its calendar, contact lists, and its great UI. It syncs with my iPod and Cell Phone perfectly.

Agreed. I use Outlook both at work and home. At work, Outlook/Exchange is far superior to Notes, Groupwise or any other mail and collaboration suite I've used. At home, it's invaluable for staying organized.

I too use outlook at home. I had a windows server 2003 box running for a while with exchange server. it was awesome to be able to connect to my email through outlook on both my pc and laptop (as well as over the web!!). It is when you pair outlook with exchange server that it really shines!

but since I didn't know what I was doing I eventually zapped the server and replaced it with xp pro. I miss the functionality of server, but I still use outlook. it syncs with my pda and I have all my contacts and appointments with me at all time!

does anyone know if there is a way to bring the functionality of exchange server (storing email, contacts, appts etc on the server instead of a local pst) to windows xp pro?

I used to hate it and avoided it at all costs then my job required me to use it all the time. Now I love it and hate it. The calendar functions ARE really good, I use shared calendars and meeting requests all the time and get a lot out of them. The rest of it is OK, 2003's default layout sucks but is significantly better than 2000 (even though they aren't really that different, 2003 seems to behave itself better overall and is more customizable). One of the worst parts about Outlook is it's built in search function - it's really slow and unless you used advanced search never seems to find anything, fortunately Google Desktop can index .pst files and comes default with a search plugin for Outlook that works amazingly well. Overall I'd say it's a decent program, supporting users on it kind of sucks though because there are a LOT of different settings and for some reason people feel a lot more comfortable messing around with their email client than they do with any other piece of software, I'm hoping Outlook 2007 or whatever has a "stupid" version that strips out all of the advanced features that hardly anyone ever uses unless you give it an admin password or something first, it would save support staff around the world a lot of time

I like Outlook, it can sync with a lot of pda's and the sort.... I am using Evolution now however, still working on the Exchange connector. I am looking at another box and wondering if I should load SLES 9 and Groupwise OR forgat all that and go with a total Qmailrocks install.... )

I am sure it will change, it always has, good thing I back up my mailboxes often.... LoL
