Worldnet.att.net was my first ISP - dialup
Then MediaOne came to town - first broadband
Then Comcast ate MediaOne up
Then and finally stuck with WideOpenWest

I signed up for a Netcom shell account in 1990 which I had all the way until they shutdown. I did try their NetCruiser solution when they originally released it but didn't like it at all so I dropped that. I then signed up for a PPP dial up account with a local provider called Monumental and used Trumpet Winsock until I got a deal on NetManage Chameleon. The last dialup provider I had was Erols.

First isp/service I ever paid for was Genie, run by GE.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEnie
The initial price for connection, at both 300 bits per second and the then-high-speed 1200 bits per second, was $5-$6 per hour during "non-prime-time" hours (evenings and weekends) and $36 an hour (to discourage daytime use)

I had forgotten how expensive it was.

After that I think it was a local provider, then I moved to AT&T.

1. AOL - I was about 10, didn't have a lot of choice
2. NetZero/A couple of other lesser known Free ISPs - despite being free, they were still better than AOL (which my parents refused to give up). had to deal with ad bars though.
3. SegaNet - got it for the dreamcast, but used it on my PC instead of AOL (which my parents STILL refused to give up, even though I was paying for another ISP). It kicked ass, I got near DSL-like pings with it.
4. Earthlink - after Dreamcast bombed, they sold their ISP subscriptions to Earthlink
5. Drexel ResNet
6. Hotwire DSL - local carrier in my building, sucked, soon replaced
7. Verizon DSL - got rid of Hotwire, no other options in building
8. Road Runner cable - new apartment
9. Comcast cable - bought Time Warner/Road Runner in my area
10. Verizon DSL - new apartment/town, wanted to ditch comcast completely
11. Comcast cable - couldn't get DirecTV for TV and the verizon dsl service was spotty/slow

then earthlink? what was it before earthlink? for a few months, then SBC DSL now turned ATT.

Aracnet, a local ISP. I used them on dialup for years, and then even through DSL.

Then I got cable.

aol (pre-internet)
school shell account
speed factory shell account (had this for a long time, these guys were the bomb)

eventually got a mindspring account, kept that thru the earthlink buyout. upgraded to dsl, eventually moved to comcast cable which i'm on now. there were a few little isps here and there along the way, but that's mostly it.

$25 bought us a 2400baud modem and Prodigy. I met someone online who I still talk to today - that had to be over 14 years ago. I even met her once a few years back too.

CompuServe, 14.4k, IIRC. It had a very cheap plan but limited to only a few hours a month.
