Who will buy Nehalem ASAP?

Looks like Intel might throw allot of us a bone with a < $300 part at release. Assuming that happens who will be upgrading in the month or two that follows?

No way at all. I just bought an E8400, I'm sticking to that for a couple years at least.

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting one at some point, the question is when. The CPU themselves are cheapo, assuming those $300 rumors are true. 4 gigs of Corsair DDR3 is $160 at ZZF, so that's a tad high, but it's been dropping quite rapidly.

So I think for me, it'll come down to when Intel gets around to releasing the P55 chipset. I expect (hope) that by then, a 4GB kit of DDR3 will have dropped from $160-$175 to a more reasonable price (i.e. under $100). Based on the previews so far, it's not clear that there's a major performance increase in using tri-channel, so maybe dual-channel will suffice.

sticking with E8400 wolfenstein & T7100 merominator until a nehalem platform is signifcantly faster than a 4ghz penryn. IMO 2.6-2.8ghz neha will equal a 4ghz penryn in clock-for-clock comparisons, until everything is multithreaded....

edit: And affordable/overclockable also - not to mention dumping money on X58's & DDRIII.

Same. DDR3 prices be damned. My upgrade from an Opteron 170 is long overdue.

The system I currently have is more than quick enough for what I do at home. So I won't need to upgrade for a couple of years. In the winter I will o/c to 4.1 ghz and I really don't even need that much speed. I may go quad core and upgrade the video cards but that's it.

I have upgrades coming here very shortly. But *when* I upgrade after that, it will most likely be Deneb.

But I guess it all depends on the Phenom overclocking abilities on the 790FX + SB750.

Your perfectly right to want to choose AMD but I cant see Deneb competing with i7. I dont think theyr in the same league. But more power to you!

I'm weak. I'll have to upgrade. I'll try my best to hold myself for at least two months after it is released before upgrading. The fact that I don't have a quad core and that I'm CPU limited in World in Conflict (it uses 4 cores) will serve as my justification to do it.

My P4 machine is due for an upgrade sometime around December this year ( that's when I will have the time to build my new PC), if Nehalem is out then and I can get the 2.66GHz Bloomfield chip for under $350 ( I live in NZ where chips cost at least 15% more than in US) I will go for it, else.. meh I'll wait for the price to drop. Given the circumstances that I'm in, I'll probably have to skip the Core 2 generation ( which is a sad thing).

My E8400 does the job very well right now (although it was a poor batch, it's a poor OC'er). I will definitely wait until around summer of 2009 for a Nehalem.

no point in giving intel anymore of my money, especially blindly out the gate
if i want to build a new system i'll atleast wait for the daneb and compare price/performance and performance/watt
