Who will buy Nehalem ASAP?

Really have to live out my Q9450 @ 3.6GHz, so I'll take maybe whatever is after Nehalem probably.

i am sticking to 775, my E6600 does all i want with a modest overclock and in about a year i will grab a quad core when they are dirt cheap and get even more out of my 775 board

I'd wait for another year and grab something like a Q9650 to replace my Q6600 depending on the prices

I need an upgrade for sure, but I don't think it will be nehalem, unless it costs like 180-200 euro's, which I doubt. Then again, I bet I can get a pretty cheap e8400, p45/x38 chipset and 4gb ddr2 when nehalem comes out, which will be plenty for my gaming needs ...

If there is one thing I have learned in all my years of computer usage, it is never by the latest and greatest. For several reasons.

1. In six months there will be a new latest and greatest, and the old latest and greatest will be had for a reduced price.
2. Sometimes early adopters get to suffer through the bugs and problems with the newest stuff. by six months most of those bugs are worked out.
3. It takes about six months before linux fully supports all the features of the latest and greatest.
4. Did I mention buying one generation behind the current generation is usually cheaper?

I don't think Nvidia got a license from Intel to make chipsets for Nehalem. You'll have to wait until some board makers decide to slap the Nvidia 200 chip onto an Intel chipset board (a la Skulltrail) before you can do SLI with Nehalem. At least, AFAIK.

As for Nehalem, I'll probably wait.

I'm just getting an X48 motherboard now and I'll hopefully move up to a Core 2 Quad soon enough, only question is which one (Q6600/Q9450/Q9550). So I'll be fine for now. I'll get a Core i7 (Nehalem) either when I get a windfall of cash or the price comes down.

Asus so far is the only company planning to release a SLI board using the nforce 200 chips.

I am in the 32nm camp. When everyone starts jumping ship I may pick up a 9550 or 9650 to play with next summer but that will be the extent of it.

Does it work on existing LGA 775 motherboards? Does it only support DDR3 ram and will the desktop part hit the stores this year, or is it only the workstation Xeons that will be released in 2008?

No. It will have 2 new sockets, the high-end LGA 1366 and the more mainstream LGA 1160.

Rumours are flying around but it seems as though 3 of the LGA 1366 chips will be released in Q4 2008. I think they will be high-end server, high-end desktop and mainstream desktop...but I could be wrong...

I think that makes the decision a little easier for me. I will go with the existing Q9450 model.. even though Nehalem will make a significant difference in some scenarios i dont think I can justify the added cost of the more expensive new motherboards, DDR3 ram and and any eventual price difference between the two CPU's.

I think I will bite; as long as it OC's decently. My 2160 won't last forever, and I was trying to hold-off quad-core until Nehalem (I haven't needed it too much yet).

As far as adopting Nehalem asap, not me. I'll wait for a variety of reasons: my E4300 @ 3.15 GHz is doing fine at the minute. I can't see the need for a processor that deals with multithreaded applications just yet: I don't do much in the way of video encoding. I may need to change my motherboard (I'm on PCIe v1.0 now) if games demand it, and that might be the time to change to a different socket, but I don't see much sign that I need to do that in the immediate future. My next CPU step, possibly mid-next year, would be to the equivalent of today's E8400/E8600, but I'm not even sure that I would gain much from that step, given my use of my PC.

Nehalem sounds, to me, like a culture change rather than a necessity. That said, if the CPU turns out to be head and shoulders above Core 2, DDR3 lowers in price significantly, and Windows 7 (I wonder if there's a connection between Win 7 and i7?) is the bestest ever by far OS, I may be tempted. But that will be in 2010. As for early adoption? No. I have a social life to support...

How else do you explain the seemingly nonsensical official nomenclature of Nehalem? Just a (not very well thought through) conspiracy...

Personally I see the marketing rational being something along the lines of picking a number that was high enough to imply a refined technology was under the hood (not an i3 or an i2, but an i7!) while making sure it was low enough to accomodate planned architectures for a few generation as an i10 makes as much sense as a Phenom 10050.

Something like:
Nehalem = i7
Sandy Bridge = i8
Haswell = i9
