Saw someone on Twitter suggest appointing Flake to McCain's seat and McSally to Flake's. Seems like solid strategy to lock out the nuts like Ward and Arpaio.

Can't happen. Flake's successor must be elected. McSally has a decent chance of achieving that. If the Gov appoints McSally to McCain's seat that would set the stage for Ward to get her ass whipped by Sinema.

Appointing Flake to McCain's seat would utterly inflame the Trumpist base.

1. Appointment by the Republican Governor Doug Ducey who says it won't be him.
2. Has to be a Republican according to Arizona law.
3. Serves until the 2020 election.
4. Whoever wins in 2020 serves until 2022 to finish out McCain's term.

My bet is that it will be a woman that is currently running for Sen. Flake's seat. Either Rep. McSally or Dr. Kelli Ward. A possibility would be to have ex-Senator Kyl take the seat over.

What's your guess?

IMO, I don't think they would give McCain's seat to Martha McSally as this would possibly result in losing Flake's seat to a Democrat next election.

That possibility already exists. McSally would probably accept the appointment if offered. It's a sure thing unlike her election.

Ducey will do whatever he sees as best for Ducey, bet on that. He needs somebody with gravitas to replace McCain & the pickin's are pretty slim, apparently. Filling McCain's seat with McSally would be seen favorably by the GOP & many swing voters, I'm sure, enhancing his favorability. Letting the Trumptards put Ward on the ticket only to have her ass whipped by Sinema might teach them a lesson useful to Ducey down the road.

Probably not. The Arizona GOP is in deep doo-doo. On one side is their Trumpian base & on the other an increasingly liberal electorate. Flake bowed out not because he couldn't win the State but because he couldn't win the Primary.

If Ducey appoints somebody far right or w/o the proper gravitas it could hurt his own chances. OTOH, he can't alienate the base, either. He may be able to hold off until after the election for all I know, probably his best bet.
