The seven should win, since it's the higher card? The highest card outside of the pair wins.

Assuming all of the cards aren't suited.

The first one to move all in.

Seriously, assuming both players stay in to the finish, the two hands would look like this:

Player 1: A A J 8 7
Player 2: A A J 8 5

So player 1 would win.

What if this was the scenario:

Player 1: Queen + 2
Player 2: Queen + 3

board:
Queen, 10, 7, Jack, 5

Yep, both players must use the best 5 cards of the 7 they each have to build a hand from. If they both have identical 5 card hands as their best, it doesn't matter at ALL what the remaining two cards were.

I have seen some poker video games that have this wrong, but that's the way it is in any poker tournament or game with a respect for conventional rules.

EDIT : Some rules have suits valued as higher than others, so it's conceivable that in a game like that, the person holding the higher-value-suit Q would be the winner.

In those scenarios, I always thought both would result in a split pot, since the high card each person has is shared, and cards below the high card don't matter, thus resulting in a tie in that view.
Maybe I was just taught wrong, or am completely forgetting how I was taught. It's been awhile since I played, and split pots were extremely rare, or someone in the same situation had a higher card than what had been amongst the community cards.
I love poker but rarely get a chance to play.

Each player makes the best possible hand available using any combination of the 2 cards they hold in their hand and/or the 5 cards on the board. This is why in the first hand Player 1 wins, and in the second hand it is a draw. If, in the first scenario you replace the 4 with, say, a 9, then it would be a draw as both players would have A A J 9 8.
