I voted Ron Paul. He didn't make himself look any worse, while the other two showed up and made themselves look worse.

Great of you to include Ron Paul in the 'who won overall' question though PJ

Actually, it doesnt matter.
With the bailout and the economy mess, Mccain has now been tagged
with the "old rule". And his VP Palin keeps messing up with interviews.
So it doesnt matter. Mccain has a hard road ahead no matter what is said or done
at this point. Its now Obama's election.

IMO, the debate sucked. The moderator was just awful, and it appeared that the candidates didn't even know how to react to his ham-handed questions and "now you stand still and let him hit you" crap. I'm disappointed.

Actually, in all seriousness I thought they both did okay. If you compare this debate to Bush v. Gore or Bush v. Kerry, I think it's striking how much more composed, thoughtful, and, well, smart these guys are. Both of them. I'm still voting for Obama, but I feel a little more encouraged that if McCain does win, it won't be the unmitigated disaster that the last 8 years have been.

lol, this only reinforces my belief that nobody will EVER change their mind to who they vote for, it is just about getting people excited enough to freaking vote.

That might help McCain.

IF he can convince enough people that Obama is too much of a risk.

People might look at Obama and say "I like what he says, but I don't trust him enough or have enough confidence in him" at which point that can look at McCain and feel that he will do a good job and vote for him.

The Ron Paul irreverent 2% is still alive and well.

In terms of the real world, I think Obama won.

And seriously folks, why are we wasting valuable thread time on Libertarian losers? Who are so stupid because they split their minuscule share of the electorate three ways.

Depending on your point of view on foreign policy and domestic issues, you'll probably call the debate a tie. However, with the situation our country is in with regards to terrorism, energy dependence, foreign relations and global competition, I will have to side with the candidate with more and better experience. Now is NOT the time to take a chance just because we need a change. Not the time to gamble about our future or the future of our children. Now is the time to look for that experience that will bring us back on track. The blame game is over and it's time to move on.

Who won the entire debate?
McCain. He kept Obama on the defensive despite being from the incumbent party.

Who won on the domestic issue part?
Obama. He laid it out pretty plainly that his tax cuts are more targeted to the middle class. McCain hasn't convinced me he's any better at limiting spending than Obama would be. It's going to take a little more than dropping the phrase "spending freeze", and he didn't list any specific examples.

Who won the foreign policy part?
I'd say it was a tie, BUT the fact that McCain kept it even pretty much means it was a victory for him.

Will this change YOUR vote?
Nope.

Will it change the outcome of the election?
Nope. I expected McCain to win. I still expect that. Even though VP choices in the past haven't really made a difference, I think that's the only thing that will kill McCain at this point. Obama doesn't seem a strong enough debater to really stick it to McCain even though he's with the incumbent party and we're in a terrible mess. Obama also just doesn't seem to be speaking passionately enough to live up to his reputation.

I think its a little silly talking about a Mccain win at this point.
Its like watching the titanic's last smoke stack barely sticking
out of the ocean, and saying "well, maybe there?s a chance, I can still see it".

I'm now even convinced Obama will carry Colorado and Virginia easily, after this.

I really can't imagine Virginia going to the Dems. Jim Webb is a "blue dog" Democrat and a veteran and he barely won the Senate race there.

I wish McCain would point out that a THIRD of Americans pay NO income tax at all.

Then ask the question: "How do you give 95% of Americans a tax cut when a third of them already pay NO taxes?"

He could also point out that the 5% of tax payers who do not get a tax cut under Obama pay 60% of all income taxes.

Or better yet point out that the 95% of Americans that get an Obama tax break only provide 40% of tax revenue.

Those 5% aren't going to win you an election. No candidate wants to piss off the middle class by suggesting that they aren't paying enough in taxes.

Besides there is already the impression among many that many rich do not pay any income tax at all and only capital gains tax so that strategy may backfire and only remind the masses of the fact.

I'd say the fact that there aren't 500 posts about Obama destroying him on here means he at least did alright.

I think McCain punked Obama on the foreign policy portion, but overall the debate was a win for Obama. Whether you agree or disagree with his policies and stances, Obama came across as a more-than-competent thinker, in an area that was supposed to be (and still is) John McCain's field of expertise.

I think anyone before hand who perhaps had thoughts that Obama was an empty suit who is completely lost without his teleprompter has found out otherwise-- and in that, Obama might have sealed the deal with those undecided hesitant voters.
