Anyone on here a teller at a bank? Give me some pros and cons here because I think I'll be quitting my current job right now. I'd be starting at $9.25 an hour and being bumped up to $9.92 an hour after 90 days. It's better than my current job considering I only make $8.69 in an hour and I know my next raise in 5 months won't even get me past $9 an hour.

I've worked for a bank for 8 years but never at a branch or as a teller, thank goodness.

It's a great way to learn some experience starting from the bottom, and a good way to meet chicks.

Yeah... the branch that I bank at has 2 smoking hot girls. Then there's the she-male followed by the flamer. Nothing like a hot girl in a business outfit.

I have a co-worker who is a former bank teller. If you are meticulously accurate (obviously a huge asset!) it's not a hard job at all.

I always found it odd that the only bank employees who actually touch the money (tellers) are among the lowest-paid employees.

Tremendous responsibility and no pay. Bank tellers need to unionize. Also a lot of pressure to sell additional bank services.

my mom is the assistant manager at the bank she works at. Does that count?

I dont. If a bank teller screws up...they are out 100 dollars. If a transfer or wire is messed out, millions could be lost.

It's like that in every profession (edit: and for Moonie's benefit - in every culture). Those as actually have to get their hands dirty are always the ones on the bottom rung.

As for the job itself, better be good at math and have good people skills to boot. It's all day in front of the public and under the camera dishing out $100 dollar bills and exact change.

Seems like it's a requirement that all female tellers have to be gorgeous. I rarely ever leave my bank non-chubbed

Math skills are not a problem for me... I work with money at my current place of business to do their accounting (always nice to know how much goes in their bank deposits). The public is nothing big for me. I'm sure dealing with people at a bank is better than a grocery store where everyone argues with your IBM based program saying that you overcharged them. How hard is it for people to read nowadays?

I work sort of as a back-up teller (long story). Not hard, but you need to be VERY accurate. I think most banks have a limit on how much cash you can be out before they fire you. Duh. As with any customer service job, busy times suck, and dead times are really boring.

Where I work, tellers perform a lot more than just standard Teller duties. Your bank may do the same. But I'll just list the basic duties here.

What teller's usually do:

1. Use computer/terminal to record all transactions.
2. Count money. Incoming and outgoing.
3. Process deposits. Checks and cash.
4. Count money.
5. Process check cashing.
6. Process withdrawals.
7. Count money.
8. Sell certified checks.
9. Submit Currency Transaction Reports to the Compliance Officer.
10. Smile at customers.
11. Smile at angry customers.
12. Count money.
13. Try to keep long line of customers happy by smiling at them.
14. Try not to look grossed out when a customer pulls cash out of...less accessible parts of their clothing. Smile.
15. Sell Traveler's checks.
16. Glance nervously at the latest police composite of bank robbers working in the area, and compare the pictures to people in the lobby.
17. Buy money from the vault when the teller drawer runs low. Count money.
18. Sell money to the vault when the teller drawer runs high. Count money.
19. Answer lots of customer questions about their accounts.
20. Balance teller drawer at cutoff time (typically 2 - 3 PM at most banks). Note that this time also happens to be when you get the most customers. So you end up trying to count all the money in your drawer while still making deposits and withdrawals.
21. Balance Teller Drawer at the end of the business day.
22. Lock up at end of day.

I have no idea how much our tellers get paid. I have heard of some banks paying $15/hour, but you need a college degree for those jobs. BTW, I think most banks will run your credit history and ask you a bunch of questions to determine whether or not you're likely to rob them.
