It's one of my favorite albums. For me, they could only go down from there.

In the 2000's...
Three albums, 26 million records, 15 Grammys, 3 ginormous tours, including the 1st and 5th top grossing tours of all time.

Yep, U2 was still easily the biggest band in the world in the 2000's. You might find someone that sold a few more albums, but other than the Stones, you won't find anyone that could also sell concert tickets on the same level.

I hope you're saying this on account of not enjoying the 80's Hagar albums because early Van Halen owns you.

Yep, and Van Hagar was still selling millions of records and selling out concerts.

I'd say 80's rock is Van Halen and AC/DC.

Early 90's was GnR and probably that horrible band known as Nirvana, mostly due to the idiot that killed himself. Had he not, they would have gone the way of Soundgarden and wouldn't be viewed as they are now.

Creed was huge in the late 90's and early 2000's until they imploded.

But again, U2 still owns the "biggest band" title overall in the 2000's.

I think everyone pretty much forgets that Rush dominated the 70s through today. Best rock band of all time hands down.

But Muse dominated my playlist for the last 4 years or so.

2000's were weird. There wasn't any one overwhelming "style" that stood out as a representation of the decade. Pop music was more...uhhh...popular than ever. There was a lot of clone bands that all sounded the same.

I think the 2000s is where hip hop finally went mainstream and pushed out rock for the white, middle class. Yes, rap was popular in the 90s but it still wasn't the dominant form of music. By the late 2000s, dubstep and progressive-house music went mainstream.

What really changed rock in the 2000s was the rise of the indie band. Modern rock is pretty cheap to produce and can be done in small studios. It's easy to mix and put out one's own album. Not that there haven't been a few big bands lately. However, I think a lot of them have struggled to retain long term popularity. There will never be another Beatles or Stones.

Too fractured to really call any band dominant any more.

U2 is a good call just for their steady success. I think only 'Pop' was somewhat of a failure, which is interesting because I thought it was their most unique effort since the 80s. They're extremely popular globally, which is rare, most bands have a hard time getting traction outside of certain areas : always makes me think of David Hasselhoff and Germany lol.

Muse is fantastic, but I think they are not even that popular in the US, at least not as much as they deserve. In the UK they can easily sell out 100k+ arenas.

Pearl Jam and Nirvana easily dominated the early 90s, but one 'died' and one sort of got lost in obscure odd-ballness. 'Ten' was a nearly perfect album, and everything that followed seemed to intentionally distance themselves from anything as immediate, emotionally honest, and approachable.

According to this:

http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-...ra-the-top-20-album-sellers-of-the-2000s.html

Yahoo has the top selling rock bands of the 2000s

1. The Beatles
2. Linkin Park
3. Creed
4. Nickleback
5. Metallica
6. Kid Rock

Metallica put out some crappy albums and still were #5. Creed and N-back...ugh.

I'd like to throw Green Day out there. Sure, they are more punk, punk/rock then straight rock. American Idiot is probably one of the best selling albums in the decade at 14 million and love it or hate it is a solid album....although its not even close to Dookie

Clearly the only people buying music in the 2000's were moms. It's amazing how bands 2-6 coincide with my top 5 worst bands of the last 20 years.

There was no rock in the 2000s.

Hell, even the 90s were just a fading echo of the 70s and 80s.

The 2000's was just proof that the 90's produced way better artists/music.
I am still listening to 90's music many years later.

I agree. The Beatles owned the 60s. From trivial pop, to album art rock. They had appeal from teeny boppers, to stoners. I also agree with the rest of what you said. I think the Beatles were an anomaly, and the other decades aren't nearly as clearcut.

Yeah, pretty much.

But he doesn't have the Stones in that list--overall, I would think that they probably deserve the 70s more than Zeppelin, even though I much prefer Zepellin. The Stones certainly put in an argument for the 60s, though--and if it must be the Beatles, then I'd say the Stones get the 70s.

War was released in 1983.

Of course, Achtung Baby was massive and they've sold tons of albums all around, but they were not much of a 2000's band.

I hope you're saying this on account of not enjoying the 80's Hagar albums because early Van Halen owns you.

Van Halen pretty much defined that 80s rock sound so it's hard not to consider them the most influential and representative of that decade. Even though I much preferred The Talking Heads or Tears for Fears and bands like that.

You could also consider U2 for the 80s.

The 2000s were terrible for rock music.

It was the era of emo whiney rich kid rock. There was no creativity. Every solo was pentatonic minor, every drum track was generic, and bass players only knew how to play eighth notes. Fucking awful.

There was no good rock music in the 2000s.

Avenged Sevenfold had some decent material as far as skill goes... not that I disliked the music of the 2000's, but it can't hold a candle to the music from the 70's to the mid 90's as far as creativity, originality, and skill goes. Today's music is very ... generic ... sounding.

Depends how you look at it.

If you want it by albums sold... then just do it by albums sold?

As for originality, I would give it to someone such as Tool.

Metallica, Seether, Nickelback, foo Fighters - it all sounds the same. Very little originality, the only difference is vocals. Same lyrics whining about a girl.

System of a Down was really popular in the 2000's, saw them in the Rose Garden, pretty good show.
