Who would be the dominant Rock Band of the 2000's?

As for originality, I would give it to someone such as Tool.

Metallica, Seether, Nickelback, foo Fighters - it all sounds the same. Very little originality, the only difference is vocals. Same lyrics whining about a girl.

Maybe mid to late 90's Metallica which is ok, but their early stuff doesn't sound at all like any of those bands.

The thing about Metallica is that their material was mostly underground up until And Justice For All which came out in 1988 (IIRC). And then of course the Black Album which is what brought them into the mainstream and maintained their popularity throughout the 90's

Not bad tbh. Green Day, RHCP, Foo Fighters, Disturbed all put out quality music in the 2000's. Linkin Park is way too high on the list but they are definitely a good band.

Keeping your opinions neutral its hard to argue against them. LP won 2 grammys, nominated 166 times and won 59 times in other various award shows (AMAs, Billboard, MTV, etc).

Green Day has been nominated 179 times and winning 89 awards....although that is all time. You'd have to subtract their 90's stuff from that list which I don't have the time to do.

Sure there may have been other bands during the 2000s that were better but I think it really comes down to these 2 in terms of commercial success/dominance for the masses.

IMHO the most dominant band/artist of the 2000s regardless of genre is Eminem. He was a huge commercial success, he was controversial, funny and was a game changer.

Edit: I think the issue with the RHCP is that they were successful in parts of different decades - late 80's to early 90's (89-95) then again in early 2000's (00-05).

No one is making the case that Linkin Park is the technically most proficient of the rock bands. But it doesn't mean their music is enjoyable. Anything that is a matter of taste has range - just because something is simpler doesn't make it worse just because some high-minded internet poster says so.

If you haven't listened to their none mainstream songs, I suggest you check it out. Just give it few tries, it took me at least 2-3 tries before I realized how brilliant they are.

And U2 is still the correct answer. Strong album sales, and concert sales that basically can't be matched by any rock band not named the Rolling Stones during that time frame.

The $$$ don't lie. People might vote for Linkin Park or someone else, but they go see U2.
