I had a friend (who has more then a basic understand about computers), but usually looks to be for more advanced advice ask a question tonight that I couldn't answer.

"If you attach 2 IDE connectors to the motherboard and the other to the hard drive, can you fry your motherboard? Harddrive?"

I didn't know what to tell, him.. I figured anything was possible, but who would be dumb enough to do that (well he was doing a basic introduction to computer innards, and he "broke" a few machine so the students could work on it). Needless to say this was the result.

I laughed a lot when I got the call, but I now I need to know the answer! I don't really have an extra mainboard I'd be willing to sacrfice to the cause (if it would cause a problem). Surely there must be some engineer here who knows about these kind of things.

I am an electrical engineer but don't know enough about IDE but from what I do know, the only way you will burn anything up is by shorting a ground and a power signal (i.e. crossing ground and power) but other than that, I don't think anything would happen other than your computer not working properly. I don't think any data would be retrievable from the HD because there is a loop between both IDE connectors on mother board and one hard drive. I wish someone would do this though to see if anything would blow up.

Not sure I am understanding this correctly, but I think you are asking if you could take 1 ribbon cable and attach the dual end to the two IDE spots on your motherboard and then plug the single end into the hard drive to see what it would do? Well... I did that once... no I really haven't ever done that and I don't know why a person would even think of doing that, so I hope someone else can answer that crazy question.

Sure way to bust a mobo and a HD in the process... its just NOT MEANT to be connected that way... just like shorting a car battery or sticking your tongue in the electrical outlet...

If a keyboard can fry a mainboard, then I would have to believe this could also...
