haha, no way that would fly this age. and chinese population now >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> japanese population pre WW2. i bet you there are more chinese in southern california now than there were japanese in the whole nation.

Well I hope thats the case, but during 9/11 and the Iraq war this solution was mentioned several times in the news.

Problem with the US fighting anyone nowadays is that its like brother against brother. Anyone see Snow Falling on Cedar Rapids? It was sad to see Japanese Americans held in camps.

I must have missed that part of the news, I only heard those solutions on the Yahoo message boards, which are known for trolls.

It wasnt like senator got up and suggested it, but they discussed the fact that there could be spies and the only way to be sure was concentration camps. The analysts said they wouldn't do it, but the fact that they brought it up in the news could have been like they feeling the publics reaction to such a thing. Plus, they detained lots of Arabs as being suspected terrorists. Aren't some still in Cuba?

True. US navy is way out of China's league. The only country who can post significant threat to US navy right now is Russia. But in a ground war, China is capable of fighting anyone.

Ah ok. I don't know about the Cuba part, but detaining someone is usually based on solid intelligence reports and evidence, not just "Hey look! An Arab, let's detain him"

Agreed. In Vietnam, we "won" virtually every engagement with the VC and NVA. They had far more casualties than we did. But we were the invaders and they were the defenders. Because of that, they were willing to keep fighting despite those casualties.

It would be the same thing between China and the U.S., assuming you take nukes out of the picture and are talking basically about a ground war. We would take far too many casualties trying to invade and would pull back out. But if China tried to invade the U.S., we would never stop fighting to defend ourselves and they would be forced to give up.

Of course this is all irrelevant because if either country tried to invade the other, both sides would be obliterated by nukes.

that might be true if china were invading america, but i really doubt any significant number of chinese troops would surrender if america were invading china.

Yep. If we actually invaded China, those conscripts would quickly become volunteers in spirit at least.

I t.hink it is a mute point. China cant really attack the US...the pacific ocean would have to be croseed first...and to do so they would need to defeat our navy which i really dont think is going to happen. If somehow they magically got a million of there troops over here then that would be a diff story..but thats just not going to happen.

The Us prob wouldnt fair very well either if they tried to invade. They would be able to land and prob take some kind of hold somewhere either trhough allied countries or just from the pacific ocean. But once we were there...i dont think it woud go very wel....there is just a ton of chinese!

If we were in serious trouble tho..i think the US could pull through. True at the moment we dont realoy prodcue a lot of stuff but i think we could turn back into the productvie engine we used to be if we really need to..

Either way..its not gonna happen so it doesnt matter.

What we need to think about is what if China and North Korea invades Taiwan and South Korea. Japan will probably want military action because of the whole "crap, they're right next to us now, lets get the other countries to help us beat them down" concept. Then, the US would have a foothold in Japan, some other smaller asian countries (can't think right now) and whats left of South Korea.

I don't think Taiwan would hold out long. Then, we have to think about who's goign to win. China isn't being invaded, the US isn't being invaded, but we're at war.

China couldn't get by the Canadian Navy. They have almost no airlift or sealift capability. They've got a huge army that is based heavily on 1950's technology, an airforce with a huge number of planes from the 60's and command and control systems that are 70's at best. They'd have no trouble steamrolling almost any other country in the world based on manpower alone. Waves of old tanks and outdated aircraft would win against Iraq or Iran or North Korea or any other country that *thinks* they're a military power. But against us? That's a joke, in a conventional war they'd be little more than cannon fodder. Our aircraft would own the skies in the first week and our tanks are so superior that we can engage and kill them from ranges beyond where they can even see ours. Fighting China in a conventional war would be like fighting Iraq on a larger scale. It would be a showcase for the superiority of our technology. They'd be targets and little more.

One way to keep China and North Korea in check is to let Japan rebuild their armed forces. The sight of the rising sun will keep em in the shadows.

IMHO, no one (except Japan itself) coutry wants to see that.
Well, not the east asian coutries including N.Korea at least.
They have not forgotten the horror Japan have put upon them during WW2 and would be all on their toes and act upon the situation before Japan gets too big
Even if it means full scale war..
If you know Japan, you wouldn't trust them with a kitchen knife.

China has a standing army of many millions.
As well as a very very large air force.

In the long run of conventional warfare, america would lose badly.

OK, then explain to me why US lost vietnam war when the Vietnamese didn't even have old airplanes and tanks. Seems like you're still living in the 70's. I believe China modernized its military quite a lot since 1980s, in areas such as missiles (both strategic and tactic), mechanic warfare (tanks, etc), aerospace technology, and navy & air forces. Overall China is still a generation behind in terms of technology, but that by itself will not determine the outcome of a full scale ground war. They're other important factors in play, like people, ability to subtain in a war, etc.

I doubt Japan will be like what they were back in early 20th century in terms of military power. Lots of things have changed. Japan can be very strong militarily for sure. But unlike in WWII, today China's military is capable of striking Japanese homeland. Also Japan's small size, dense population, lack of natural resources is a serious disadvantage for them (which is why they lost WWII). But this is off topic.

For those with the invasion through Mexico or Canada. Red Dawn was a movie. It didn't happen.
The Chinese aren't going to be able to mobilize and move its forces without us knowning.

China couldn't invade the US. They don't have the ablity to safely move its troops here.

The US could mount an invasion of China. However it would cause the US to spread its forces so thin that
it would be extremely difficult to mount a successful offensive. Also not sure on China's policy of nuclear weapons
but the minute China invaded the US we would launch a nuclear offensive. I imagine China would have a similar policy if
the shoe were reversed.

Germany had the technological advantage at the beginning of the war, that's why they did so well early on. We caught up quickly though and by 1943 the technology was fairly equal. From that point on we went ahead and won on sheer manufacturing power. Our bombing raids destroyed German industry, when they lost a plane or tank it was virtually irreplacable. If we lost some machinery there were 1000 more just like it to take it's place. China doesn't have that sort of heavy industry, it's a largely agricultural society. They can't win a war of attrition of mechanicals, only on manpower.

I think France and Britain would be more of a threat then Russia right now in blue water battles. Regarding ground war, the US has let things slide so much since cold war days. We can't even hold 200 thousand troops in Iraq without calling up and forcing reserves to stay past their terms.
