Bahram Manahedgi, 50, said he was buying cheese when the car plowed through, then came to rest with one person on the hood and a woman crushed beneath it.

I think it had something to do with the cheese.

My girlfriend and I went down there about an hour after it happened. Wilsihire was packed and there was ambulance after ambulance after ambulance going east on Wilshire towards UCLA Medical Center. Once we got there, there were tons of people everywhere - some crying, everyone on cell phones. It was just crazy.

this guy in his 70s or 80s almost hit me once cuz he ran a red light. the light turned red for him and i started crossing. he was far away so i assumed he would stop when he reached the light, but he didnt, and he almost hit me. i didnt even know he was there until i heard a car screech. i looked to the left, and an inch away from me was his car. he didnt say anything. just kept looking forward. and i moved on.
I wasn't going to mention this, but since you started it...

The elderly should be required to re-test for their driver's license. When I get to be 65+ years of age, I will GLADLY do it myself. If I think I'm still competent, what do I have to lose? Sure helps to keep a lot of crazies off the road.

Medical conditions are another story. Either way, just doesn't make any pedestrian anywhere feel very safe. At any minute of any day, someone can take your life because you're outdoors.

I say another vote to get old people out from behind the wheel. I mean, if it takes them 20 minutes to cross a street, how can we expect them to make quick decisions and responses when driving?

I don't know what switches in your head to think that the brake is the gas all of a sudden, but it happens more than I'd like to hear about.

Usually it's a story about a person driving through a window of a store/restuarant/etc. More often than not, nothing bad happends to the pedestrians. But, sometimes it's bad. This time it was really bad.

I also think there should be a driver re-tests but I don't think it would catch this stuff. Not the 'normal' test anyway. 99% of the time they might be fine, then one day something just clicks wrong and the gas is the brake pedal...

You could have a special Dr. exam, but, even that might not find anything.

The driver was not arrested, but investigators were considering whether the case was "manslaughter of some type"

This kind of sh!t really makes me mad. The guy didnt do it on purpose, nor was he under the influence....
It was a fvcking accident.

Maybe the city should start putting up concrete barriers in the street on the days the market is open?

as much as I feel bad for the people that died and their families, just imagine how the old man feels.

he's already at his dying age and he causes this mess.

More people are going to probably die from those critical injuries

Yes it was a accident. BUT 8 people died from it. More probably will. I hope he gets vehicular manslaughter. Gets his license taken away but serves NO jail time.

After the age 60 people should be tested yearly. if there is a serious health risk then they should NOT be allowed to drive.

My father-in-law was blacking out a few years ago (mini-strokes) he CHOSE not to drive anymore. Heck he hasn?t had a black out for 4 years and he still chooses NOT to drive. Wish all people would do such.

I actually witnessed the incident. I work in the area, and decided to go out for a walk to pick up some lunch from the Farmers Market. For those of you who are familiar with the area, i was walking north on 3rd street. I was about 100-200 feet away from the intersection of 3rd and arizona when i heard a huge commotion and saw the car blow by me, heading west. He was easily going 70 miles per hour. I am still in a state of shock after seeing the aftermath and realizing that i was that close to being hit by the car. I remember vividly all of the bodies, the blood, and the man that was carrying the limp body of a young girl. i ran into some co-workers who said that another co-worker was down at the farmers market, so i went back frantically trying to look for her. I passed numerous bodies, a lot of crying people, and people who were like me, in utter shock and disbelief. it still almost seems surreal to me.

I didn't realize that the Farmers' Market in Santa Monica has been a tradition for almost 20 years if I heard correctly. I am surprised that this hasn't happened more often.

now 9 confirmed dead and the police say no sign of medical problems for the driver, simply hit the gas instead of the brake

Simply hit the gas instead of the brake? WTF? That would take a person all of a fraction of a second to correct that and apply the brake. This a$$hole drove at high speed for blocks.

This is a old man, like 80+ years old. Same thing happened here in my town. Old woman drove right into a Ice Cream parlor, no one was killed, but said same thing, I THOUGHT I was hitting thr brake.

This is why older people need better reviews for getting their drivers license. Of course the AARP will never let this happen, and with the baby boomers getting older, expect this to be more common.
