Do you also like to pay twice as much?
I'd take the Volvo. The Audi looks like a$$ in comparison.

What are you talking about. The current '02 S4 Avant goes for $41,000. I doubt that the new one will raise prices THAT much. I hope you're not pulling that "twice as much" price out of your a$$

As for the looks. The Audi is elegantly beautiful. The V70R is a flying brick with some soft edges

Also, the next S40/V40 will share platforms with the next-gen Ford Focus and Mazda Protege...LMFAO

Its all subjective. I think the Volvo looks better IMO.

I don't care what platform its based on. I care about its performance when we get production cars.

I think with a V8 the price is going to go way up. I wouldn't be surprised if it fetches a 10-15k premium.

I'm curious. What do you drive, NFS4? I'm hoping that it's something cool, considering that you seem to follow European sports car and luxury car news pretty closely.

Let's see:

1) Both are wagons
2) Both seat 5
3) Both have 300+ HP
4) Both have AWD
5) Both have 6-speed manuals
6) Both go like stink

I'd say they're pretty evenly matched

7) Both use Audi engines

i think the unasked question is, which car would you rather be in if something goes wrong at 155 mph?

Or maybe which is going to offer the best reliability with all that performance?

That's wicked.. my friend had a 740 with about 480,000 kms on it.. finally broke down for the last time and became too expensive to fix. (got rid of the car)

Volvo has an amazing track record for reliability.

We've got a Dodge Ram 350 at work (RAM VAN) that has just about 800,000 kms on it.

Yeah, for a dodge () those vans are hard to kill.
Volvo's use strange engines.... weird gearing... they are just so different.
One of our cars was a 5 cylinder! Probably not uncomon to most, but still...

Wowowowow... arcain[/] Volvo use audi engines??

IIRC, NFS4 drives a '98(?) Camry.

i would kill for either of those cars. wagons are the only thing i'll drive cause i have giant guitar amps to carry around, but refuse to drive some lard ass suv or van. a wagon like that would rock my world.

Ohhh no my friend! Far from it. The Volvo engine is designed and built in Sweden.

Yeah, and Audi started that 'weirdness' with their 5 cyl Quattro back in the 80's.

The business of Volvo looking like pieces of bricks was over with since last generation of Volvo cars. As for the Audi looking *THAT* much better than the Volvo, I don't think so. They're apple and orange in appearance.

<<Every different car sold in America is apples and oranges in appearance. What's your point?>>

Not really, some cars look really similar to others, and I dont want to delve into the specifics.

The point is, to one a car may look beautiful and elegant and all, but it may look like crap to another. There is no point arguing about something that's subjective. On the other hand, you seems to have a big ego against Ford-owned manufacturers, and an obscene lust for Audis and VWs. You know, that's all find and dandy whoever you prefer, but there is no point forcing your preferences down to other people's throats.

and one has THREE less cylinders....

A Viper SRT-10 has 10 cylinders
A Corvette Z06 has 8 cylinders

They are pretty much an even match on ALL accouts besides price.

A Honda S2000 has 4 cylinders
A BMW Z4 has 6 cylinders

Cylinder count does not necesarily mean a disadvantage.

Where did I FORCE anyone to like Audi? Opinions are like a$$holes...my opinions are no more relevant of irrelevant than the next. As for Ford, they deserve whatever they get:

X-Type: riddled with bugs and poor built quality
The new XJ8: delayed 6 months due to quality problems
Explorer: current model was recalled twice within 6 months of introduction
Focus: recalled about 11 times since introduction (most recently for issues relating to engine fires)
Escape: recalled about 6 times since introduction
Ford Thunderbird: production had to be haulted due to issues with the 3.9 liter V8 engine
Lincoln LS: see T-Bird

If I have any reservations towards Ford products, I think that I have damn good reasons.

The next gen Focus will serve as a basis for the next Volvo S40/V40. You SHOULD be concerned with Ford's problems.

In addition:

Ford's Jaguar unit had 2001 operating loss of $82 million
Ford to sell $3 billion in vehicle loans to Bear Stearns

Nah, i don't think its even a close comparison, to be honest, the V70R seems to me like a baby S4 Avant almost, 40 less hp and 50 ft/lbs.
