Just got a new unit, my second 3225 from Costco. No worries in copying the POIs again, working in the first attempt. For US$149.99 this is a great price. I just could not resist it since I was planning in buying another 12 volt car adapter ($19) and another cradle + support (another $25 or so)... Then, the GPS ended up costing $100 to me (considering the accessories are part of the new one).

I tested this GPS in Ontario, Quebec, New York, Geogia, DC area... so far, very happy, worth the second purchase.

First off, many thanks to Timekeeper for all the time he has put into this thread. I've downloaded both files but I copy+paste the password on the first post and it comes back as wrong password? Any advice?

I got it to work. For some reason it didn't like the copy paste-of the lower case so just typed it in and voila!

Purchased the 3225 a while back and updated the POIs. My parents just purchased the 3140. I was going to update the POI but when I checked the Map folder it has the US48_POI.POI with a 300801 KB file. Does it require updating. The file is bigger than the one now in my 3225.

I do not know anything about 3140, this POI data is for 3225.

I downloaded the 2 files and extracted them. File 2 is empty, but I connected my 3225 and renamed the original US48_POI.POI (42 MB) file on the device and copied the downloaded file (193 MB) )to my 3225 and it's working great. I can see more points of interest near my home and near my job I couldn't see before. Thanks

Hey - how would you compare the mag 3225 to the TomTom ONE XLS?

The text to speech is really crisp on that device, I like it.

XLS is 4" screen w/ TeleAtlas map.
TTS on TT seems to be Last min notice. ( I never test the XLS, but I have fully test the 720 model)

You shouldn't ask me about TT, I was never a TeleAtlas fan.

I know I've heard the word on the street about TeleAtlas... all I know is that I've used TomToms and have had really great luck with them. Whats your take on that 720? I know that one has a ton of great features.

It is easy to unlock the VTT (voice to text) feature.
hmm.... ONLY feature I like about TT is ability to correct the map myself.
Other than that, I guess I still don't like its display style.
It seems less contrast. Again, TTS voice is not as sharp.

I took the device apart and found the battery still small and wouldn't last more than 100 min. hmm.......

Hi there, Ijust got one of the 3225 today, however, I'm in Canada. Are there any new POI for Canada or just the US-48?

Mapshare is a really great feature! Another reason to love the 720. Text to speech isn't as smooth, you mean? Like it sounds too contrived?

And where did you learn how to unlock the VTT?

actually "mapshare" is not all that useful.
according to our research, not many willing to download other's correction. (people generally still go through map google, map yahoo, map msn and do the correction themselves)

unlocking VTT wasn't hard, I got one easy file to upload from one of our test engineer.
( personally, I don't know much about SW structure, nor where he got it from )

I did it the simple way on my new Maestro 3140.

1. Charged my machine fully. (Just safety, you know.)

2. Downloaded and extracted the new POI file to a single file, per original instructions in the first post in the thread.

3. Plug in machine to my PC via USB and get it mounted as disk.

4. Go to MAP folder, and copied the original POI to My Documents as a backup.

5. Deleted the POI file from the 3140. Now, there's room for the new one.

6. Copied the new POI file to the 3140's MAP folder.

7-10. Unmount the 3140 from the file system, turn it off, turn it on, and reset it.

11. Observe that I can still use POI, so it apparently worked fine.

Okay. So that all went well enough. Here's the real kicker, though... How do I know the new POI file is larger in content than the old one? There's no record tally to tell me that it has 6 million rather than 1.5 million, is there? What POI record could I look for that would confirm for me that it really is both different and larger in content? Just curious about that.

Anyway, I think my way is simpler than the other methods I've seen here, and it worked. Your mileage may vary, I suppose. And it shows that it can be done on the 3140.

I really like this 3140 so far.

Hi Timekeeper,

I didn't get chance to look at all the pictures you posted for the inside of the TomTom but you are talking about the battery being small and one of the pictures shows a silver thing with 4# 2W on it and a + - .

Just to let you know that this is NOT the battery, it is the speaker. The numbers mean 4 ohm which is the impedance of the speaker and 2W means two watts which is the power handling capability. Technically it doesn't really matter which way around the speaker wires are connected as long as the body of the speaker isn't grounded for some reason.

LOL, I am aware that's the speaker.
I think I have tested enough GPS to know the differences.
I just didn't post my entire 720 review here, that's all.

here is the "missing photo"

Hi TimeKeeper, didn't mean to insult you. I've read a few more postings and you're obviously a great help to people here. I have a couple of extra questions myself:

1. The extra POI's - do they apply to Canada and is the database the same in the U.S. and Canada
2. Have you compared the Nuvi 250 and the Maestro 3225 - there's only $50 difference in price in Canada (3225 is $150 and Nuvi $200) I would be willing to spend the extra if the Nuvi was better.

Thanks - Paul

I have tested 2xx line up, including W series.
I am not a huge fan of Magellan. ( I test them, but doesn't mean I love them)

There are three version of Nuvi 260, Sirf, Bravo and MTK.
MTK 260 is by far my all time favorite. Not only to its fast satallite acquisition but also its accuracy.

Battery can last easily over 4 hours per single charge.

You might as wait till next month, as NT navigator 2009 will be out by end of this month.

I always felt that the mapshare feature was used more heavily by TomTom owners...

I mean its probably one of the best TT exclusive features that makes their brand unique.

That pic above of the GO 720 dismantled - nice. It looks just as good on the inside as on the outside.
