ok it was like 8 months ago and i was in a napster chat room trying to see if somebody knew of this song i was looking for. this was back when napster was good. anyways this guy started talking abut suicide. i think he is full of crap andi start telliing him the best ways to do it, he wants to slit hi wrist so i tell him how to make it really work, thinking still that he is screwing around.
so after 20 mins this guy has a really good idea of what it takes to commit suicide by slitting his wrists. he then says he's off to do it and he leaves napster. a few weeks later i checked on his username and he had never been on since, i checked quite a few times after and still he never came back on as that name.

do you think he really did it and do you think i am partly to blame?
and please take this serious

Yeah I would feel pretty bad about what you did, although you couldn't of known that he was so mentally unstable.

That's really sad. Hopefully, he's off someplace getting some help for his depression and not dead.



Even if you think someone is pretending to be depressed in order to get attention, this is a pretty good example of why it's good to take any threat of suicide seriously. You just never know.

so you guys think there is a good chance he did it? he didn't really seemed depressed and i figured he was just a loser looking for some attention, but when he didn't ever log back on i got worried, and by then there was nothing i could do. the few poeple who i have talked to said that the biggest thing for me was to take it serious and learn from it.

I think that was really dumb. You didn't know this guy, you had no idea what he was going to do. He could have gone off and done it and now he's dead and you feel bad about it. I think if he actually did it then yes, you are partially to blame, since you could have provoked him just that little bit over the edge. If you think he was a looser looking for attention, tell him that, and leave. Works best for everyone.

yeah learn from it dude.. ppl that talk of suicide are usually thinking of it to a certain degree, though I think only one in 4 (or something like that) succeed.

I wouldn't assume he did it. There have been quite a few places that I simply lost interest in and never went back - maybe that's how he felt about Napster. Maybe he took a week off to think about things and decided to cut down on his time online...you just never know, I guess.

I don't want to beat you up any more than you're beating yourself up - you're not the first person who didn't take someone's threat of suicide seriously and you won't be the last. If he did kill himself, it was his responsibility - and the responsibility of the people around him that didn't help him either.

People who threaten to commit suicide usually do talk about it, so you probably weren't the first person to hear him say it. Nobody can expect a total stranger on the Internet to be responsible for getting another person psychiatric help, but there were probably more mature ways to handle what he was saying to you.
