I prefer to cook whole chickens using these methods. I grill breasts for use in salads or to serve with pasta.

We buy all of the chicken-varieties. Whole bird for beer-can chicken, breasts for chicken strips and teriaki chicken as well as BBQ for the wife, legs (for me) for BBQ, and occasionally, cut-up fryers for fried chicken. (yes, it's cheaper to buy a whole bird and cut it up, but sometimes the convenience is worth the couple of extra pennies per lb.

That's the next logical step. Ever since a side affect of the creating beakless chickens was gizzards that taste like cocoa puffs, the possibilities have been endless.

Whole chicken is definitely a better value. When whole chickens go on sale for $0.59-$0.60/lb, we buy 6-8 of them. Then cut them up and freeze them. From 6 chickens you get 24 wings which is enough for two meals for us (just me and my wife). You get 12 thighs which we typically boil and then pull apart to make pulled chicken sandwiches. We'll 3-4 meals out of the 12 drumsticks which we typically grill with BBQ sauce. So you get all this extra meat and still have 12 chicken breasts like you would if you only bought the breasts. We also typically throw the carcass and other scripts in the crockpot for a few hours with some onions and carrots and salt and pepper to make chicken stock.

No, you can't break a wing into the "drumlet" andl WTF the other thing is called, and call that two wings. Each is part of a single wing. I don't give a shit what the "wing restaurants" want to call it, there are only two wings on a chicken...

A couple of points:

1) If you're paying $4 for boneless chicken breast you're throwing away money. It's EASY to find for $1.99 a pound and even $1.59-$1.69 with a little careful shopping.

2) I actually prefer dark meat for most applications as it's more moist and flavorful than white. I only use white meat for stuff like cordon bleu or Parmigiana where bones simply won't work.

Don't be a chicken snob. It's cheap, it's versatile and the whole bird is tasty if properly cooked.

What part of the country do you live in?

It's not as easy as you might think. If you live in NYC and don't have a car you are limited to what is in your neighborhood, or what you can get to by subway. I don't know anyone who uses the subway to get to the market, it's to much of a hassle. I'm sure if I really wanted to I could make a day of it and find some chicken for $2/lb, but if I want to be practical I can't find the cheapest possible deal on every item every week. In this city cheap markets are rare.
