Whole Foods is the best! When I did an all organic steam cooked diet I was in the best shape of my life. I got lazy and tired of all work it took and now just order out =( I need to get back on that diet again!

My local 99 Ranch (Cupertino) has comparable produce at 1/3 to 1/4 of the price Whole Foods charges, depending on the day (Sunday early afternoon is always the best). Whenever I head to Whole Foods, I keep seeing these 20-some year-old fresh college grads looking completely clueless about how to pick produce. That's the type of customer they're trying to market to, I guess. Call me silly, but I take pride in knowing what to look for when choosing my produce. Then again, my family runs a restaurant, and I'd been helping my parents with cooking/picking ever since I was little.. so what do I know...

Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to sound curt. Coincidentally, I just got back from my wife's friend's Christmas Eve dinner. This lady is a professor in Poli-Sci, and earned her doctorate from UC Berkeley. She started to criticize genetically-engineered foods, "conventional" medicine ("Really, the ONLY conventional medicine has cured was malaria."), etc. She fits the stereotype of a pinko marxist hippie perfectly, and went off to mention something along the lines of "The industrial revolution was a conspiracy by the upper class to subjugate the proletariat." I rest my case... damn, what does this rant anything to do with my previous rant. Sorry guys!

Ugg, 99 Ranch produce sucks, it is usually old. I really hate how they freaking bag everything. I don't want 10 zuchinni, I want one! Unless I need something very specific that only they carry I never buy my produce from them. also the Cupertino 99 Ranch is nasty, they need to hose that place down, I try to go to Milpitas or the new Mountain View one. You need to go to Milk Pail market in Mountain View (off San Antonio), that place rocks, almost always has cheaper/same prices and ALWAYS has better produce.

You go to 99 Ranch to buy Zucchini?? Are you kidding?? A good grocery shopper knows where/when to buy certain produce, and you do not go to 99 for Zucchini. You go there for ???, ??, ??, etc. More specifically, you go there during the early afternoon on Sunday. That's when they restock. Also, the new Mountain View store has an issue with their sliced beef for hot pot. It's always frozen, whereas the Cupertino store constantly slices them and puts out new (not yet frozen) and fresh packs. The Milpitas store isn't too bad, either.
I will try out the Milk Pail in Mountain View, thanks for the advice!

Whole Foods in Tustin moved to much bigger digs a few miles south, and has all kinds of prepared foods etc., but the area is VERY competitive for that upscale dollar with Tesco's Fresh and Easy opening a few stores.

Martinelli's used to be my benchmark holiday deal, 99 cents or a so, but looks like those days are past.

I love their bulk spices and bulk foods sections, as you can really save a lot of money there getting just what you need, or buying pounds of steel cut oats on the cheap.

...but $2.50 for Martinelli's cider? It was $1.79 at the grocery stores here in Oakland, CA right before the holidays...

No of course I don't buy zuchinni at 99 Ranch, I don't buy any produce there as I said unless I can't get it elsewhere, since it all sucks. That was just an example of their stupid policies about prebagging everything. OK, I only need a couple of bok choy, not 10, how about that? Not to mention all those items they use those styrofoam trays for, I am not a tree hugger, but come on. Also, early afternoon on the weekends in Cupertino has severe parking issues, I do everything I can to avoid that store until after the lunch crowds.

most of them stuff at whole food tastes disgusting. I don't care how healthy they are but it doesn't worth the misery, and absolute not worth the price they charge.

don't buy their prepackaged organic soy chips or anything. You want nasty...there you go. Everything else...like real food (ie veggies, fruit and seafood) is fine.
