I remember buying a Radeon X800 XT PE back in the day. It cost $750 (plus tax).

Oh god those were terrible times with everyone being ripped off for components.

But it did let me play Battlefield 2 with great FPS.

Same could be said for luxury cars or any other luxury item. To me, it was well worth the cost. So far, I've had them for 2 years now and they still look and work fine. To have this level of sound quality provided to you everyday for 2 years now, is well worth the asking price. If you heard them, you'd understand too.

I tried being a "true gamer", but every time I tried, I failed.

By which I mean, every time I bought a new system, I got sick of it after a while. As a kid, got my mom to get me a Gameboy Advance, played 2 or 3 games on it, then stopped touching it. There went $150 - sorry mom.

Most recent was my PS3. Got that during a holiday sale for $300 plus a game. Think I played 5 games all the way through on that thing. Problem was that every time I played, it felt like a chore. I'm addicted to being on my computer and having the TV on at the same time - PS3 takes over TV and computer stays off, so double whammy.

I'm a PC gamer almost exclusively. Love games like Diablo III. That's pretty much all I'm playing when I'm not out riding my literbike of course.

Not me. I hate playing games on my PS3, except for sports games, but those are too damn complicated now so they are not even fun anymore. I do like the JRPGs on there too, but last time I checked there were not that many of them and I honestly don't have enough time to play them anyway. /grumble

I remember my BF2 days. It was around the time that AGP was REALLY dying out and I was trying to get a decent AGP card that wasn't an absurdly inflated price. I wasnted to get a x800 AGP but the AGP version was significantly more expensive that then PCI-E version and i wasn't going to have any of that shenanigans.

Anyway, being a gamer means you play more than one damn game, you play a multitude of games and even go past what the game might normally demand of you.

In Eve online, I spent hours creating entire spreadsheets that maximized my profit to effort ration. In Megaman legends, I spent entire nights trying to kick that FUCKING CAN INTO THE GODDAMN STORE so I could get easy Zenny. Hell, I even try to decipher then almost undecipherable user interface in EYE. Managing entire empires in Rome Total War, learning how to play Hearts of Iron without attempting to kill yourself, building scenarios in Empire Earth that pits future robots with lasers against cavemen with rocks. Managing galactic economies in X3 or picking up Nova: Escape Velocity because I thought SPAZ was boring as crap and wanted to play the basics. EV is in fact, a much better game than SPAZ.

You can't really call yourself a gamer just because you play the top 4 more popular games. I don't call myself a movie critic because I have arguments against the most popular movies or some sort of Pink Floyd fanatic because I bought DSOTM after i watched the transformers movie. Hell, I know people who can themselves fans of Journey and they only know Don't Stop Believing.

Back in MY day, if you wanted to play a game, your REALLY had to want it. Boot disks, EMM memory commands, swapping floppies/CD's, setting IRQs for your sound card, setting up IPX networks...you kids an' yer XBoxes where all you have to do is wipe off a disc once in a while to get something to work.

Yeah, and god forbid if you used stacker sw, you'd never get above 590k.
