I never use an MS login, but my retail Win10Pro seems to follow me okay from PC to PC. Not sure how I have pulled that off...

And it doesn't even require you to do actually manually tie them I believe? Let me know if I'm wrong so I can get that done this weekend.
I haven’t upgraded my PC since win 8, but I believe all you have to do is log in to your win 10 install with your MS login and it will tie it to your account. When you build your new rig, you log in with the same credentials and it activates win 10 to your new mobo. If you don’t want to use your MS login as your windows user, you can create a local acct and delete the MS user. You only have to do this for your first install on your new system. Subsequent installs will activate automatically (until you get a new mobo).

...we’ve probably gotten a bit off topic, but I’m pretty sure that’s how it works!

If retail has a cd key that’s probably how that works. If you upgraded from win 8 you wouldn’t have a key.

...either way, migrating a windows activation to a new pc doesn’t require a new key, which is the point.

Used to depend on the OS version, lots of people bought OEM versions and got upset when it wouldn't activate with new hardware. I haven't kept up with licensing, is this not the case anymore?

I just wanted to say goodbye to my beautiful thread. It served its purpose but will now fade away into nothing. We now have builders threads and review threads and everything threads to replace all the old threads, including this gorgeous "who's buying" thread.

Go ahead. I'm ready.
