Which ones? Like what the Entmoot do to Sarumon or the burning of the Shire? The movies were long enough as-is and the plot holes were closed well enough to suspend my disbelief, even if they left out portions of the book. I can appreciate that other folks want the extra scenes, it's just not important to me.

Heard from where? The transfer on the theatrical edition is fine. I've watched them a couple times on my 1080p projector and see no issues with edge-enhancement, banding, softness, or whatever problems you typically get from a bad transfer.
Fellowship is a Tier 3.25, Two Towers is 2.5, Return of the King is 1.25.

Here's some discussion when they were close to release: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1237167

Sounds like RotK is a nice transfer, but there are some major flaws with the FotR and some with TTT.

The quality would have to blow the DVD's away for it to make sense.

if you have a projector, you should easily be able to tell the difference between BRD and DVD. On a 46" HDTV viewed from > 8' away - not so much.

Oh I agree. I can ALWAYS tell the difference between BRD and upconverted DVD, even on my 46" Samsung LN46A650 @ 10', and even more so on my 110" HT screen (Epson 8700) @ 12'. But some people claim that they cant tell the difference between a BRD and upconverted DVD

That's funny. Any time I want to show off the projector, I go straight for Return of the King. I guess there is a reason for that.

If you really want to enjoy an extended version of the story, read the books, including "The Hobbit."

I was actually just randomly looking at the TVs at Fry's and came across two TVs that were playing one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. One looked nice and everything, then the other just stood out. It didn't look like film to me and made me want to look for the edge of the boom mic or flaws in the set pieces. It ended up being a high end 240Hz LCD.

To me, it's not the additional detail with blu-ray that knocks me out of the movie, it's the 240Hz refresh. All the motion blur is gone or something. 3D also annoys me so they still have to work on that for me to want to see movies in 3D even in theater. 3D done in Post just doesn't seem to look very good.

FFS you can turn OFF all the motion smoothing on those TVs and remove the soap opera effect it has nothing to do with blu ray and everything to do with the TVs settings

Exactly, that's why I was comparing a top of the line tv with an above average tv, but the high end tv appeared like everything was fake. I assume this is because motion smoothing was actually off and the TV interpolated the frames to get 240Hz. The source was the same so it was not blu ray that made the movie look fake, it was the tv. Really, if they wanted to show off the expensive tv, they should put a football highlight real on.

Why not wait for the special edition that comes with a silicone reproduction of Peter Jackson's cock so that you can drop the pretense?

I want to, I have the EEs on DVD but I think it's worth it. Speaking of however, anyone know of any good deals on it? Sad to say I missed on the Borders pre-order coupon last month.

The fact that they STILL aren't putting both versions on one disk with seamless branching makes me want to punch someone in the neck.

But I'll still get it.

You just lost your man card dude....seriously....

??

Anyway, I put a pre-order in for the set, but now that I see the used theatrical set around $25 I'm a bit torn as I'm not sure I really need the extended.

Anyone here watched both the theatrical and extended versions and can give an opinion on whether the EEs are worth the extra money and runtime?
