<<Not only that, but having big torque down low makes driving more enjoyable.>>
Personal preferance, and I respect that. I can see the allure of gobs of low-end torque, but I personally love the mechanical cacophony of a small engine at high RPM. It's all in your driving style, and probably a good degree of what you have gotten used to. I like the peakiness (is that even a word?) of an engine that needs and wants to be revved. As for your complaint about automatic transmissions, depends on the car. The 4-speed autobox in my Accord shifts depending upon engine load or redline. If I accelerate hard and then lift of abruptly at 4000 RPM, it shifts at 4000 RPM. If I accelerate lightly, it shifts at 2000-2500 RPM, and if I keep the throttle firewalled it shifts at 6,250 RPM (redline). Redline in second is 65 mph, and if I am cruising at 60 and firewall the throttle, the transmission downshifts to second! I swear the dang thing rev-matches on a downshift, because if I'm coasting through a corner at 30 mph or so (redline in first is 35 mph) and jump on the throttle, the engine revs to ~5,750 RPM before the transmission slams into first. The thing is the roughest stock transmission I have ever encountered. Of course, I love it because it has great response for a slushbox.
