Next year, it might make sense to file as common law with the gf so we can write off a bunch of medical stuff like glasses, prescriptions, etc. The rule in Canada was something like medical expenses need to be a minimum of 3% of gross income before they can be deducted. Things like dental and glasses are expensive even with insurance, but it still falls slightly below that 3% mark. My gf is a full time student with a much lower income, so she would basically pay no taxes at all and have tons of education credits for future years if we put all medical stuff under her name. It would also be interesting to put her education on my taxes because my income is so much higher than hers.
