I'm not sure if this website is exactly correct, but it may be, I just don't know. Just for fun I put in a salary of $25,000 a year and it puts it in the top 2% richest people in the world.

It would be more useful if it compared your salary to those only in your country. $25k/year would make you a king in Ghana, but nearly everywhere in the US you're going to have a bad time.

So is the discrepancy in the "Taxes Paid" on these 2 screen shots here due to the SALT thing on the new tax bill?

The difference there is why we're going from getting around $3k usually to owing like $150.

Man that is some bullshit. There are also these other personal deductions that stopped this past year. My deductions went from like $46k to $24k. Huge fucking difference. Fuck you even more Trump.

i wonder if high-tax areas will do anything to offset it. short of actually lowering property/income taxes, i can't think of anything. it was a wash for me because no property taxes, but if i had a house in a high COL area i would've definitely taken a hit.

You guys are way too angry about this shit for being as privileged as we all are here (Except for you, Sonikku).

I prescribe one visit per year or as often as you think you are unduly suffering.

I like how it doesn't believe that you can make less than $1000/yr

No idea what's going on with my W2s yet, so I won't know for a while.

You earn $1,500,000,000 in 1 year. It would take the average labourer in Indonesia 2,019,821 years to earn the same amount.

Rightfully so - if they want to give such advantages at the STATE level - that is fine, but living in a HCOL area should have no affects on your federal taxes paid.

I haven't done my state taxes yet but the past few years we got like $600 back or so, so hopefully we just aren't in the negative when it's all said and done. I'm still waiting for one little form before I file so I didn't do my state yet.

I just booked a trip to Grand Cayman too thinking that our tax return would cover a lot of it, but now, if we're lucky, it's only going to cover a small portion of it lol.

We try to pay enough in estimated tax payment so that we don’t owe much. We almost never get a refund.

On that vein of thought, living in a low tax state should mean you don't get your state budget subsidized by federal money.

Don't hold your breath, That tax cut won't do much for most people. I have been playing with TurboTax, my obligations will not change much from last year.

It ain't "fair share" since it's not an equal %. Never was. I also never understood why you get taxed more because you make actual improvements to your home and the value goes up. It's complete BS. Nothing fair about it. Tax us on the plot size instead because that's actual use of resources (the land). So yes, my neighbor with a $400k house should pay the same taxes as his neighbor who has a $700k house. Let the number of kids in school be another unit to measure. Utility meters will take care of the rest.

Just like fucking unions perpetuate laziness for equal pay, charging people more as they improve their homes is completely ass-backwards.

I don't expect sympathy (from the internet of all places), but people who are for these ideas need to open their eyes.

Building materials aren't also resources? How do you figure that?

Fine. Then those poor ass states that wholly depend on federal welfare, paid by HCOL residents in wealthy states, should stop begging for that cheddar. Let's see how long this populist rhetoric lasts.

Fine by me - but that doesn't really jive well with the leftist "Help subsidize the poor" narrative.

Also those poor ass states aren't as red as they seem, so you might be throwing some of your own people under the bus there

EDIT: Also in reading highland145 link above, their calculation of how states "contribute" is SEVERELY flawed. Just because a corporation pays $50m in federal taxes and its headquarters is in California... doesn't mean that all the revenue that contributed to that profit came from California...

My wife and I will get a large refund. Not as large as last year - the Trump "tax cuts" hurt us significantly - but still large by most people's standards. We both prefer to get a refund so don't take any allowances and put in additional money with each check.

What if you reduce your withholdings and then put the excess into a Roth? Or just into a brokerage account. You are giving the Government and interest free loan as well as not earning additional income on your earnings.

I usually withhold enough and do an estimate around October so I pay a couple hundred at tax time. This year I forgot to do that and I thought I would owe a couple thousand or so but I turns out I'm getting back several hundred.

Would Apple, Google, etc be as successful is they were located in other parts of the country? Regardless, it does suck as a resident of the SF Bay Area and a homeowner to be attacked by red states.

Last year CA took in about 105B in federal spending but contributed more than $378 billion.

This is true for both individuals and businesses:

This major contribution to federal tax revenues holds true for both California’s individual taxpayers, who contribute more than $1 in every $7.75 of net federal individual income and payroll taxes, and for California’s businesses, which contribute nearly $1 in every $6.75 of net federal business income taxes.

lol I love the lefties...

"The red states are taking all of our federal tax contributions!"
...but... "The rich need to pay more taxes!"

Make up your minds. Where do you think rich people live? Mobile Alabama?
