Unfortunately, yes. Ivy Bridge will not get six-core CPU support. To get six and eight-core CPU support you need Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy Bridge-E, respectively. Sandy Bridge-E probably won't support PCIe 3.0 and will have less SATA ports than originally intended, so if you're thinking of going that route I recommend waiting for Ivy Bridge-E instead.

Bottom line is intel cut back X79 and removed the features that made it appeal to me so now im noing to wait and see what the next workstation/enterprise chipset brings.

I fully agree with you. I was excited to get SAS support on my desktop, but now I have to wait or buy a server board. But I do not think Intel will release a new chipset for IB-E. I think the next highend chipset will be for Haswell-E in a few years.

Does anyone know 100% about the IB Firmware update for bios on z68.
I saw a few posts in forms that stated the IB mb bios needs to be a higher number firmware not just a simple bios update.
To do that new firmware update I guess you must erase delete all the chip info first.
Now after the firmware flash there may be no bios info on the chip to flash the new bios to.

A bios update is a newer firmware. firmware is more of a general term.

As to how the flashing occures, yes, all of them delete the current bios/firmware and replaces it with a new one. It is why some updates can go bad if you have a power interuption or use the wrong firmware file to update with.

In multi-tasking, not really. In video encoding, yes. Typically it's a healthy 15-25% boost there.

Last upgrade I made was to a QC9300 middle of last year pre-FF14, Would like to get this so I can finally get idling power below 100W. Only thing I'm really planning on doing to tax the PC would be Diablo3, so if it plays well enough with that CPU and a HD5770 I might hold off a while longer though...

One thing I would love to do would be to upgrade the work laptop, but I'm not sure we have the budget to do that. Hell, I'd like more than one tiny desk for my paperwork first.

why would you spend $1000 on a desktop processor? You're better off buying an i5-2500K and getting yourself a decent GPU and a high end SSD. The SSD is far more important that the tiny performance bump you'd see for your extra $750.

I would venture a guess that those who drop $1000 on a CPU probably either already have a high-end SSD or plan to get one.
