Who's got an old AMD X2/AMD 64 rig as their main computer?

I use my computer (check sig) mostly for browsing, music, watching videos and some gaming here and there. Oblivion, rFactor, GTR2 and GT Legends get the most use. And frankly, I wouldn't gain much by upgrading to a C2D or any sort of a Quad Core by now. Plus I've got more than enough RAM for my needs, and if the gaming itch ever gets me, a 4850 along with this CPU should handle Crysis without much drama.

Anyone else happy with their "old" CPU?

Well, I am certainly. I have been thinking about getting a new rig in the next months, but honestly my computer does everything I want him to do, which is give me playable framerates in my favorite games. My Athlon 64 X2 3800+ is still chugging away together with my (t)rusty and old GeForce 7800 GTX. I could use a reformatt though, bit I think I can live with a bluescreen a week (on average).

Milk it. I could have gotten away with my Opteron 180 for much longer as my main desktop/gaming CPU, but I wanted to build an MCE box and figured I could transition it to that role.

You're a perfect example as to why Intel/AMD are worried that demand for power has reached a plateau and adding more cores, etc, won't necessarily be a temptation for people to upgrade. I remember when the average PC struggled to run Word when an MP3 was playing and the thought of embedded video everywhere was a dream. Back then, CPU generations were revolutions. Today, for the average user, the need to replace a CPU every two years ended a few years ago.

I am very happy with my rig in sig I use for gaming, I play at High res anyway so a faster CPU does nothing for me (high res= GPU bottleneck, low res= CPU bottleneck). There was a review a while back showing how little of a difference a faster CPU makes in most games at high res so I am content to stay with what I have until Nehalem/Bulldozer.

I'm using my old 939 3800x2 as a HTPC and it is way more than sufficient. I did build a new quad core Q6600 system to do video encoding. It is at least 4x as fast as the 939 system for that. But for everyday stuff, you can't tell them apart. Most people have no need far a faster computer because there is nothing they do that can use it. They are way better off spending the money on better monitors, chairs and peripherals.

i got a 754 as backup though. Main computer? that's bit old. considering how cheap the dual cores are. doubt anyone here will be.
acutally your X2 isn't that old. still a dual core.

As my recent research and findings from places and this board, my X2 6000+ is more than ample for gaming and quad core confers minimal advantage (for me) at this time.

So yup, happy camper.

i bought a Core2Duo thinking it would be significantly faster than my Opteron 175.

it's not (that much faster) ! i have run 3D Studio Max on both systems, i could swear
it's more stable on the Opteron. e.g. not crashing during a big rendering.

I have an X2 4200+ (running at 2.2GHz), 2GB RAM, just upgraded my 7800GT to an HD4850. Haven't had a chance to really do anything with it yet, so I don't know how much better it will be for gaming.
GPU benchmark fps almost doubled though, ~26 to ~49fps. (that's all I've really run so far).

I have my 754 3000 clocked at 3.3 and it runs XP and most sports games just find. I was using it for FAH, but too much power for the little bit it did. My main desktop is a dual opteron 880's, I don't think I will need to upgrade them for awhile.

My daughter uses her X2 3800 with an x800 AIW for homework. She's going to the Seattle Art Institute, where graphics design is the name of the game. Of course it also doubles as her bedroom TV.

See sig for rig. I want to get something better though, such as graphics card, but my 17 inch monitor is really limiting my gaming experience if I was to get a better graphics card.

I watch movies and asian dramas, anime, listen to music, and run F@H whenever the computer is on. Oh, I also use it for homework. Nothing intensive though since I'm in high school.

Exactly the same as my setup. I am using a quad for my gaming/encoding rig, and 3800x2 for my media pc. Works just fine.

I am happy with mine. Wouldn't mine a newer video card, but it does OK.

My girlfriend was using an A64 3200+ s754 system for about the last two years. Most up-to-date component was the 7600GS GPU.

I got her hooked on SupCom and now she's got an overclocked E2180 system with my old 320MB 8800GTS. Sure, it can't do huge maps on SupCom, but neither of us can afford quads anyway.

Other than SupCom I don't think it's affected her computing experience in any way, shape, or form, for better or for worse.

Perfectly happy with my $269 Dell E521 x2-3600+ at stock with 2gb of ddr2-800. Does everything I need. I don't game. Threw a $9 2600xt in there for kicks.

Have a 4 year old A64 3200, have loved it, though have been jealous of new machines, realistically I don't have time for anything that requires more than what I have.

My video card has given me some problems and I've had to reinstall XP a couple of times. But not problems with the CPU. I even bent one of the pins *gasp* when I first got it and managed to bend it back and never had a problem.

Don't think I can wait till Bulldozer though for my next rig, so may have to go Penryn, Deneb or Nehalem

I'm not planning to upgrade any time soon. I mostly just play WoW and the occasional FPS, but I was able to play Crysis at pretty decent settings with the system below.

My primary gaming/crunching rig is an X2 4600+ with an 8800GT, which runs Folding@home GPU and CPU clients 24/7, and plays Bioshock/Crysis etc... quite well at 1280x1024 resolution.

My wife's rig is an A64 3000+ with an x1650xt, it's fine for her surfing/MSOffice needs and runs BOINC 24/7.

Both run Vista Ultimate and get the job done just fine. I'm happy with oldish CPUs, and get prefer to upgrade the GPU more often than the CPU.

I did just upgrade the kid's rig from an Athlon XP2500+ to an E7200 Core 2 Duo and a 8600GT - the old Athlon XP was not an efficient or productive cruncher; now the kids can surf and play their games while BOINC runs 24/7.

The upgrade path for the 939 system is tapped out, and it will likely be passed down the line to my Mom before the year is over. I don't know what I'll replace it with , but it won't be bleeding edge tech.

I paid $300 for my dual core Opteron, so I plan to get my money's worth. By the time Nehalem comes around, maybe there'll be more reasons to switch to a quad core, so I'll jump on that.

Still using my Socket 939 A64 X2 4200+ at 2.2GHz. It can do 2.8GHz stable but I haven't overclocked it for a long time as I no longer crunch SETI. Will upgrade the CPU eventually but I'm playing Oblivion at 1920x1200 and it makes more sense to apply my limited funds on upgrading my 3870 to something faster (4870 or 4870X2) and with more GDDR (I do feel the need for 1GB over 512 MB).

Running a 939 3700+ at 2.8 with 2G RAM and X1800XT 512. Still runs BF2 and COD4 fine, albeit only at 1280x1024. next computer os going to be a 30" monitor (305T) and I've been drooling over it for about 10 months. Gotta pay off credit cards first though....

I do. I'm definitely not ashamed of my computer. Its amazing as a homework computer. I've got my 22w LCD multi'd with a 17in lcd and my TV, providing a killer media/workspace. Games still run awesome. My videocard is a league above my cpu, but thats fine. I can max my games out at my desire and get the most possible frames out of my processor.

x2 3800+ @ 2.6ghz with a 8800gts 320mb and 2gb off ddr 400mhz ram. Chugs along just fine, although the ram on my videocard might be to little for 1680*1050. Cpu wise I think I'm fine for another year or so.
