Marty, if you like AA, then the 4850 really delivers. 1680x1050, 8xAA would run just great.

Yeah... I think it's pretty pointless to buy a 3870, actually. Around here the price difference with a 4850 is quite slim, and the difference in performance is huge.

Plus I'll have no trouble with my current PSU; the x1950 pro and the 4850 both use around the same power on idle and load.

I can't wait to buy a 4850!

Still running an X2 3800 at 2.5ghz with 2GB ddr500 (yes, it's socket 939), and just picked up a 3850 for $80 on ebay. I'd love to go to a quad core intel setup, but I don't really feel constrained with what I have.

Sure about that? My 4850s are supposedly 110W, I don't know what the X1950 Pro is, but I thought I read 65W somewhere. I've been wondering if I could upgrade these machines without replacing the PSU. They have X1950Pro/GT in them.

I've got a socket 939 AMD X2 4000. The CPU is fast enough for most things, though it's a bit on the weak side for Supreme Commander.
2GB of DDR, never needed more, don't need DDR2.
PCI Express slot works just fine, though I do need a new video card (x1800xt, though I like to play at 1920x1200, which is impossible for new games right now.)
My power supply is an old Enermax from when I built a socket A system. It doesn't have SATA connectors or a 24 pin motherboard connector (it's a 20 pin.) I have plenty of Molex -> SATA adaptors though ....
I will be buying a new video card some time soon (hopefully), and when that time comes, I'm also going to order a new power supply. I'll go with something bigger than I need, but only because I hope to keep it around for at least 5 or so years.

I have no problem with my s939 X2. I won't be replacing it for another year at least unless it dies, as I have something more important for me to put my money into (saving up to buy a new house).

Everything seems to run pretty fast on it, and I don't have a game I can't max out on it with my HD3850, so I don't have any practical reason to replace it anyway.

still using rig in sig for gaming, went from 3200+ to 3800+ x2 to 4800+ x2 @ 2.9ghz

also running 2x opteron 275 (socket 940) with 3gb of ram and my old 7800gt. Makes for a great linux workstation for coding and video projects.

My C2D PSU comes in 3 days so I have been rocking my AMD system.

Opteron 180, 4g DDR400, NF4 SLI, 2x 8800GS SCs in SLI, 160g SATA. Works like a charm.

My HTPC is a S754 A64 3000+ w/ 6600 AGP.

Like Marty502 suggested, you might want to compare prices with the 4850 before you pull the trigger on a 3870. I didn't realize they were so close in price.

Check this:

Radeon x1950 Pro Power Consumption

4850 Power Consumption

So, according to those numbers, the 4850 is a bit more frugal.

Hmm..shit shit shit. Making me want that HD4850 again...

Is the HD4850 worth the extra $50?

In one word.....YES.

Don't waste your money on the 3870, the 4850 will pound it and that's with immature drivers. Should get even faster with the 8.7 Catalyst drivers.

Gave my AMD 64 rig to a friend of mine. It has a NV 6800GS unlocked. It's plenty of horsepower to him. His previous rig was a 1st gen PIII. He mainly uses it to store his music and videos, and play the occasional demo of a first person shooter.

Not in my main PC.

UT3 struggled bigtime on my Opty 165, even OCed to its max of 2.6 GHz.

I run what once was my main system, an Asus A8832-SLI Deluxe + Opteron 165 + 2x1 Mushkin HP3200, as a fileserver/backup system now.
It gets turned on once in a while to back up stuff to...then gets shut off again to save power/noise/heat.

Yep, that's the way you do it, S939 X2, that's OLD school. I like mine still a lot, can't ever be upgraded given it's a Shuttle and doesn't OC well, but it still runs great and I might wind up installing a 4850 at some point. It's still my main work machine, but the new one does my Blu-Ray.

You can't have a socket 939 4000x2. They only made that flavor in AM2.

The testbeds are different, so you cannot compare the two numbers absolutely. If you take the load number minus the idle number, and express the value as a delta over idle, then the X1950 Pro is 64W, and the 4850 is 89W. So the 4850 definately takes more power.

My main machine is a 939 with an X2 4200 at 2.6, and it works as well as I need it to. I would have overclocked higher, but the mobo doesn't want to.. the cpu does though. The only real options I ahve for upgrading are video card and maybe RAM. I have 2 gigs in there and am running XP, so i am not sure if putting another 2 gigs in there is samrt or a waste... and the 2 gigs in there now are a matched pair. The video card is a 2900 Pro. I am looking at either a 4870, 4850, or 9800 GTX+ in a month or so.

Oh.

But, and now I'm asking, it's not such a bad difference that it will melt my PSU or something, right? I mean, my own x1950 Pro's gotta be around 70 something watts actually because mine is OCed quite a bit, as you can see on my sig. I shouldn't have issues... I guess?

I'm kicking around the idea of selling my main rig and using the money to build two AMD X2 systems -- one to replace the one in the family room and one for my office.

At the price I payed for my 4400+ I'm not giving it up any time soon... and I really have no reason to upgrade.

I can play Crysis, COD4 and everything else perfectly fine.

The only think that sucks is that for some reason I can't OC it *at all*... I think its my RAM, but I'm not entirely sure.
