Sure about that? My 4850s are supposedly 110W, I don't know what the X1950 Pro is, but I thought I read 65W somewhere. I've been wondering if I could upgrade these machines without replacing the PSU. They have X1950Pro/GT in them.Originally posted by: Marty502
Plus I'll have no trouble with my current PSU; the x1950 pro and the 4850 both use around the same power on idle and load.
I can't wait to buy a 4850!

Like Marty502 suggested, you might want to compare prices with the 4850 before you pull the trigger on a 3870. I didn't realize they were so close in price.

Hmm..shit shit shit. Making me want that HD4850 again...
Is the HD4850 worth the extra $50?

I've got a socket 939 AMD X2 4000. The CPU is fast enough for most things, though it's a bit on the weak side for Supreme Commander.
2GB of DDR, never needed more, don't need DDR2.
PCI Express slot works just fine, though I do need a new video card (x1800xt, though I like to play at 1920x1200, which is impossible for new games right now.)
My power supply is an old Enermax from when I built a socket A system. It doesn't have SATA connectors or a 24 pin motherboard connector (it's a 20 pin.) I have plenty of Molex -> SATA adaptors though ....
I will be buying a new video card some time soon (hopefully), and when that time comes, I'm also going to order a new power supply. I'll go with something bigger than I need, but only because I hope to keep it around for at least 5 or so years.

You can't have a socket 939 4000x2. They only made that flavor in AM2.

Check this:
Radeon x1950 Pro Power Consumption
4850 Power Consumption
So, according to those numbers, the 4850 is a bit more frugal.

The testbeds are different, so you cannot compare the two numbers absolutely. If you take the load number minus the idle number, and express the value as a delta over idle, then the X1950 Pro is 64W, and the 4850 is 89W. So the 4850 definately takes more power.
