total RAM of 3GB? How does that work? Is it a kit, with 2x1GB and 2x512MB? Or is it two sticks, each with 1.5GB on each?

The latter: two at 1 1/2 GBs per.

That's some pretty strange stuff then.

I built this system in January of 06 with an A64 3200+ processor and parts I gleaned from my old system. I eventually replaced the 3200+ with a X2 4400+ a year after I first built this system. I also upgraded my video card twice from a 6600GT to a 7600GT and then a 9600gt. I upgraded my hard drive to a much faster one last year along with a sata dvd burner.

I have been absolutely pleased with this system every step of the way. I bought it with a upgrade path in mind. Those upgrades have kept this system relevant for the past 2 1/2 years and should keep me going until Nehalem. I will repeat the process of scavenging this system for parts when it comes time to upgrade.

I honestly can't tell much of a difference between mine and my brothers C2D system in daily usage. (I built the system for him.) I just can't justify the expense of upgrading the memory, mobo, processor and a new copy of Windows. My inner geek wants to upgrade to a quad core C2Q system, but my tightwad side has won out on this one.

Oddly enough, this is true....

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/...05/3gb-memory-kits-ocz

The next one is something that made me scratch my head enough for it to bleed, a 3GB memory kit. OCZ has them in DIMMs and SO-DIMMs for the 32-bit OS upgrade market. Windows has a broken memory model, and can't see more than 3GB (technically a hair more), so OCZ is filling that niche. No more RMAs with "1GB doesn't work" on it, now you simply don't get that 1GB. It will be interesting to see how it works in the market, but we want to see a bundle with a three-core Phenom and three ATI GPUs just to play with people's heads.

Quick update:

I got a new video card as you can see. All I can say is that if I had any doubts whether my CPU was still enough, now they're gone. This thing kills! Crysis, Oblivion, WIC, never looked better and smoother.

I'm strongly considering getting rid of this 3870 in fact, and buying a 4850 straight away.

Trying to squeeze 2.8 Ghz on the CPU wouldn't hurt though...

i have an athlon 64 4000+ san diego core and it is definitely starting to show its age. plays age of conan like crap (20fps or less) reguardless of resolution with my HD2900 pro 1gb and 2GB of DDR400. looking to overclock it so i can make it last till Nehalem launch, at which time i will probably upgrade and put this as my backup rig

That is not entirely true. I have a heavily overclocked single-core and I am chugging along fine. I would certainly love a faster computer, but disk storage is my biggest limiting concern right now.
Maybe if I get a Christmas bonus this year I can upgrade to something more 'future proof'.

All the best,

Depends on what you mean by "main" computer... my main desktop is an X2 5000+ BE @3.15 GHz with a pair of GeForce 9600s... but I've finally ended my Intel boycott by getting a Penryn-based gaming laptop with a GeForce 8600 inside. Honestly I can't tell that much of a difference. I still use my old X2 3800+ / Radeon X1550 rig for WoW and Guild Wars, I only power up the SLI monster for Crysis and Oblivion.

Years ago I had an Intel 80286 that was perfect for my needs (word processing.) Then it died and I replaced it with on 80486 which I thought was overkill.

Then I discovered SETI@Home and I have been in an upgrade-to-the-latest-and-greatest mode ever since. Recently I replaced 3 FX-60s with 3 Phenon 9850BEs.

I will always be looking for more perfomance!

I upgraded from an AXP 2800+ to my X2 and was blown away, I plan on milking this until I actually need an upgrade.

So I take it this isn't the X2 system you're trying to sell in your sig?

My DFI-Expert and opty 165 @ 3.8GHz is still running fine. In about three years I've only had to relax a few mem timings. Have yet to run into anything I care about that it couldn't do. Games just fine for me, but I'm not as into it as I used to be. I thought for sure I'd have burned it by now. My buddy Has a very similar system to mine that is dying however. I'm researching an E8500 based upgrade for him now. Been out of the OC loop since the opty 165 days.

3.8GHz or 2.8GHz?

I'm still using a tbred-b 2000+(stock1.6Ghz@2.17Ghz&1.8vcore)/1.5GB DDR RAM/Asus A7V8X/6800GS@U machine

It's slow, and the cpu/crappy via KT400 chipset/cheap ddr bottlenecks my 6800GS@U something cruel. Photo editing is agony. It has an evil cold-boot problem (only boots about 1/3 attempts).

But it generally works, and it's more than sufficient for word/excel/firefox/HDTV...

I'm using a 3800x2 w/ 2GB. The poor thing cries every time I have it encode HDTV. The max I get is 4 fps. I'm trying to wait until 2009 to upgrade to a quadcore system.

Why not just get a Q6600 system now?

To be real honest here, the E7200 was a huge leap from the X2 4200+ I have. I don't notice much of a difference in terms of Firefox and Office use but once you hit the games, the difference is like night and day...but then again that also attributes to my HD4850. I say if you got $500 or so, you should go and build yourself a new C2D system.

As of late, I have been trying to cut my computer budget down as much as possible (I have other things to spend money on now). Currently, it sits at $500, but even at that I was still able to upgrade my X2/3600+ to X2/4200+ (for $20, wtf not?) and upgrade my Opty165 to a Q6600 (total rebuild from top to bottom). The end results for both are in my sig.

I still use the AMD as my main machine, it does everything I ask it to. With 2 gigs of ram and ATi 1900AIW, i can do pretty much ANYTHING i need. I rarely play games, so the power is mostly just for when i do photo processing. It's nice to have, but 90% it runs in CnQ's lowest state. Uber quiet, too.

Still running my Opteron 170 s939. Haven't had too much luck overclocking it. I think my 4 sticks of cheap 512mb are causing problems when overclocking. I had it stable at 2.4ghz when I was playing Crysis, but it was running very hot and the CPU fan was making lots of noise even at idle so I'm back at the stock spead of 2ghz.

I'm still holding out for Nehalem.
