The easiest benchmark for this is the National Unemployment Rate, if it goes up then layoffs are out pacing new hiring, if it goes down then new jobs are replacing the lost ones.

Not really. Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the nation and it's dropping but not because of job gains. Job gains and job losses are both flat but unemployment is dropping because more people are leaving the workforce and many people are just leaving the state. Those are both factors that U3 don't measure.

Oh really? Then why did they vote overwhelmingly for SS in 1935 and were split down the middle on Medicare in 1965?

You have a false understanding of history. Conservatives campaigned against SS for 20 years after its passage in 1935, and when they regained power in the 50's, promptly accepted that it was simply apart of American's way of life and so dropped efforts to get rid of it as a result. Same thing happened with Medicare, except they resisted it far more when LBJ was attempting to pass it of course (where you get half from I don't know). And, of course, they wouldn't dare utter repealing Medicare now, except to say they want to "reform" it.

We could have had single payer, but instead we had to go with the republican plan(that they still wouldn't vote for). This plan was concocted by the Heritage foundation. It is at least something that will benefit 10s of millions(more if you count no pre-existing conditions).

Funny how 10 years of raising costs 10% a year wasn't enough for layoffs but now all of a sudden it matters!

Yup, its funny how the Republicans answer to the health care problem is nocare. They have no solution and the go buy your own policy doesn't work because nobody can afford to pay 1k a month for their family. The whole losing your freedom over Obamacare is laughable. Tell that to the unemployed person who has no insurance and gets sick on their loss of freedom. God, you GOP people not only are usually broke and rely on handouts but have no brain cells on top of that.

companies will use any excuse to cut cost. Nature of all corporations. What's the big deal here? People should get fired if they are not providing valuable productivity in the work force anyway.

People lose their job because they are no longer necessary, go start your own business or learn to adapt to this fast changing work environment.

I stated the facts. Links? BTW...both parties want to "reform" Medicare.

No, you didn't. You just made it up. Links?

Dems don't want to "reform" Medicare into a private voucher program. Sorry.

I stated the facts. You say I made them up. Here's links to support my statement.

Social Security Vote

Medicare Vote

If you have links to disprove what I said...now is a good time to post them.

Also, I never said that Dems wanted to "reform" Medicare into a private voucher program. You just made that up. Reading comprehension appears to be a lost art.

Dude, we are not a socialist country. No one is entitled to both have a family and be able to afford it. If one can't then you have to go without.

Scary links.
If by "scary", you mean partisan fear mongering, you're right. Though I understand why wing-nuts need to pretend layoffs are something new, unprecedented, and the fault of that Kenyan Muslim socialist in the White House, reality paints a slightly different story. Layoffs are, unfortunately, a normal part of business. One need only look at employment reports to see this. (Or perhaps the nutters have some other magic explanation for the millions of jobs that disappeared near the end of Bush 43's term.)

Breathlessly cherry-picking anecdotes to prove how Obama is killing jobs is really the pinnacle of brain-dead partisan hackery. Anyone who falls for it lacks critical thinking skills. (Fortunately, I can help with this. Send me $49.95 via PayPal and I can send you a potent supplement to help with such gullibility. Really.)

Looking down the list, I immediately saw two companies whose situations I'm familiar with. Neither's layoffs has anything to do with Obama. Research in Motion (RIM) is downsizing because they sell Blackberries. Blackberries have increasingly become an anachronism in a world of iPhones and Androids. It's quite similar to why employment is down in the buggy industry.

U.S. Cellular is "downsizing" because it just sold two of it's markets to Sprint, to fill holes in Sprint's network. U.S. Cellular got a handsome check; Sprint's coverage doesn't suck quite so much. It's a win-win. Further, many of those jobs will likely move to Sprint. The rest are a victim of economies of scale, something most righties praise ... except when it happens during Democratic administrations. Then they're OUTRAGED!!!!, right on cue. Baaaah.

I suspect if anyone looks into the details for the other companies listed, they will find many similar stories. While no doubt some of them are partly due to increased regulations or other government factors, most are capitalism in action. Why do Republicans hate capitalism?

Yup, and this is why the GOP is about to go the way of the dodo bird. If you're dying and lost your job, go fuck yourself.

Heretofore, every piece of "bad" economic news shalt be blamed on Obamacare. So it is written, so shall it be done.

As was done to Bush. It's a national pastime and always has been. The top dog always gets the blame.

Lots of layoffs announced after the election. Obamacare is driving them. Surely someone here is, or is going to be a casualty. Just curious what their thoughts might be.

Mourning in America - Here's Those Layoffs We Voted For Last Night

Welch Allyn
Dana Holding Corp.
Stryker
Boston Scientific
Medtronic
Darden Restaurants
JANCOA Janitorial Services
Kroger

Some smaller layoffs below.

Smith & Nephew - 770 layoffs
Abbott Labs - 700 layoffs
Covidien - 595 layoffs
Kinetic Concepts - 427 layoffs
St. Jude Medical - 300 layoffs
Hill Rom - 200 layoffs

The reduction of hours at Kroger is worrisome for me. I have a number of their employees as members. They don't get paid well to start with and a reduction of hours will certainly mean defaults. I have a strict policy that defaults go to collections so this is not going to be good any way you look at it.

Sacrifices have to me made I guess.

kroeger and papa johns can beach, cut hours and lay off people all they want. in the long run someone else will take up the business they are giving up while they pout. companies that would lay off people for that reason are anti-american. shame on peyton for doing papa john commercials
